Spaghetti House is just everywhere over Hong Kong. Anything particular great about it? To me, frankly no, but just a place nice and convenient enough to have a meal with family or friends. However, I've decided to write a review on this dining experience at the Spaghetti House at W Square, Wan Chai because it had given me a totally surprising dining experience at the restaurant. However, I've decided to write a review on this dining experience at the Spaghetti House at W Square, Wan Chai because it had given me a totally surprising dining experience at the restaurant. I am actually not talking about the food quality, but its service and impression on the night. I'm pretty sure that we won't encounter such experience oftenly in Hong Kong.
The day was actually my sister's birthday, but since it was on a weekday and that she was having exams on the next day, we decided to just have a simple dinner first and later have a more decent meal afterwards.
It was about 6 something when we arrive the restaurant. Only few tables were occupied, and as it was actually a pretty big and spacious restaurant, the restaurant seemed to be especially quiet. Actually we have been to this Spaghetti House twice before, but it still kind of surprised me that the waiters can already remember our family. They gave us a warm welcome, and you can feel their sincerity in serving you.
One of the waiters, whom I believe is actually the manager, chatted with my dad. It was a really friendly chat and very soon they were chatting as if they were old friends. He then generously offered us a plate of Chicken Wings in Black Pepper & Honey Sauce Chicken wings usually won't go terribly wrong. It's always an all-time favorite for kids. The honey gives a mild aromatic sweetness to the chicken wings and the black pepper gives a little boost on the flavor. There was tomato relish served along with the chicken wings and it was very refreshing when eating with the chicken wings.
Then there were soups from the dinner sets we ordered. We chose the lobster bisque, clam chowder and minestrone. The lobster bisque has probably been the favorite soup to us. We have always loved the rich texture of it. There were some lobster meat and mushroom in it, and probably one of the best parts of the bisque is that it wasn't bitter. The clam chowder was fabulous too. It's pretty rich in texture as well, and flavorful of course, and there really were whole clams inside. For whole clams I mean along with the shells. The minestrone wasn't bad either, nice texture and not watery. A variety of vegetables were included in the soup, with kidney beans and farfelle pasta, which the kids find it a delight.
Let's start with the dishes we ordered. Firstly, there's a new promotion on the Boston Lobster with Duo Tomato Au Gratin ‧ Penne Rigate in Lobster Sauce , and it's the first thing I pointed onto the menu, saying that I want to try it. At first I actually didn't really expect that there'd be a decent half-side of a lobster that there's actually meat in it. Frankly, there wasn't much flavor from the lobster. Even if there is, the cheese on top may have kind of covered the flavor though the cheese wasn't of any kind of strong flavor. Nonetheless I still adored the dish. The dish may not taste stunning but it has definitely left me a good impression. Moreover, the tomato relish was really absolutely refreshing and appetizing. I just loved the tomato relish so much. The penne was okay. The lobster sauce was savory and the whole combination of the dish was great.
Triple Cheese & Seafood Pizza Next was a pizza under promotion as well. There's nothing particularly special about the pizza. It was fair and moderate. The sauce in the topping has quite a nice flavor though. I was expecting something a bit heavy with the sauce but it turns out quite light. The overall texture was nice.
Tripoline with Parma Ham & Grilled Chicken in Cream Sauce This was the third dish that we ordered under the promotion. The pasta Tripoline isn't any common kind of pasta you'll find in Hong Kong. It's a type of pasta which looks like ribbons, and it's thick and ridged at the sides. This lovely-looking pasta is just the type of pasta that'll make kids smile and request for more. The texture of the pasta alone was fair, but when with the combination of the white sauce, the texture was just good. The sauce was rich but not thick, and it's flavorful. The parma wasn't authentic though, it was okay but just not especially stunning. One ham was cut into a long slice and curled up like a flower and was placed at the centre of the dish. That was a pretty nice presentation. Lastly about the grilled chicken, their grilled chicken usually were great. The meat won't be too thick and it's soft in the inside with a golden surface. The grilled chickens in Spaghetti House has always been tasty.
Squid Ink Risotto with Seafood in Lobster Sauce Au Gratin And now we ordered our family's all-time-favorite dish in Spaghetti House. We have always loved this dish as we love their rich lobster sauce with lots of seafood, including mussels, fish fillet, squids, scallops, shrimps. However, I actually have my doubts over the word 'risotto'. Frankly there was nothing in texture that the dish seems to be a risotto. I think the interpretation of risotto for this dish is that aborio rice is used in the cooking but not that the dish is an authentic risotto dish.
Pipe Rigate with Ham Au Gratin The birthday girl chose this dish as she loves creamy food with lots of cheese. This dish is a hearty dish that suits her. I remember I used to have tried this dish years ago in another Spaghetti House, and my impression was that it was so heavy in taste and was absolutely a hearty, stomach-filling dish. But this time was a totally different sensation. The sauce wasn't as creamy as before. It's just cheese and the cheese wasn't too heavy like those for mac'n'cheese. However, I can't say this is a good thing because in turn that this dish lacked the hearty texture and sensation.
Spaghetti with Italian Meat Sauce Needless to say, this is a popular classic pasta dish, but it was just so so. I think the spaghetti was a little bit too sloppy and the meat sauce wasn't particularly rich as well. I was actually sort of disappointed with the dish.
Risotto of the House Once again, I don't get the 'risotto' part as mentioned above, and I prefer calling a fried rice more actually. Anyway, despite that, I quite liked the dish. The dish included salami, Canadian bacon, Italian sausage, ham and mushroom. It was not oily and was absolutely savory.
Linguine with Mushroom and Pesto Sauce Various types of mushrooms are included in this dish. I enjoyed the light sensation and texture of the whole dish. However, I would like to pick on that the pesto sauce was not outstanding enough. I could taste the olive oil more than the basil or basically sometimes not even the basil.
Throughout the whole time, the waiters had been really friendly to us, especially the manager, who had been keen on chatting with my dad and had been cracking some jokes that fill our table full of laughter. Last but not least we wrapped up our dinner with desserts, and here's a surprise.
I really appreciated that the manager remembered that it's my sister's birthday and he lighted up a candle onto one of the desserts we ordered, which was the Banana Split Who could've expected that? The thumbs up for this picture isn't because of the quality of the dish, not that it's bad, but it's mainly because of the surprise. That was really heartening. Back to the quality of the banana split, well, things couldn't go much wrong with it, so it's pretty fair.
Homemade Cheese Cake The cheese cake was pretty nice. It has a soft and velvety texture. And the cake wasn't too heavy in taste as well.
Baked Banana & Chocolate Crumble with Ice Cream This was absolutely a pleasurable experience to eat. The cold ice cream along with the warm crumble gave a terrific sensation and texture. In the banana and chocolate crumble, I could taste some liquor added to it, which I find it as a delight as I think that really gives rise to the taste of it.
In overall, I was very satisfied with the dinner even when I actually have a really picky tongue. The food, to be frank, wasn't of a really high quality, fair and so so I'll say. The satisfaction came from the heartwarming service and the sincerity of waiters. Seriously how often would you encounter such dining experience in Hong Kong? or I should say, have you ever had such experience? I feel that this was probably one of the best dinners have ever had. What matters the most is that we really had a delightful and enjoyable dinner.
