I ordered a cup of Kompot. Actually I tried it in Poland before, where my local friends told me that it’s typical “school food” commonly served in canteen. As a quick introduction, it’s a cooked fruit drink made from various fresh or dried fruits with sugar and spices. I think the Russian one here tasted slightly different- it’s more refreshing with a hint of peppermint.

Then I ordered a 3-course lunch set. For the starter, I tried Borscht, the quintessential Russian soup. Unlike the Polish rendition that I ate before, this one has some sour cream on top, which would later whiten the soup upon mixing. This one also seems vegan as it’s not served with any pork or beef apparently.

You can see the chopped beetroots and potatos, sprinkled with some herbs!

Here comes the main course! As an oily fish, the mackerel fillet is tender and sumptuous. It’s well balanced by the fresh and sweet beetroot with horseradish and herbs lying underneath. However, I’d say don’t expect too much because it seems more ordinary or less exotic than the other dishes here.

Medovik is definitely the highlight of this Russian meal! It’s a Slavic layer honey cake popular in Russia and countries of former USSR. It comprises layers of sponge cake with a smetana (sour cream) filling and cake crumbs. The smetana is very smooth with a touch of lemon juice, which makes it a heavenly combination with the distinctive caramelised, slightly burnt honey flavour. It’s also a perfect wrap for this meal.
