I felt like having something fresh and palette cleansing for dinner and this just happened to be the first place I found. I got off to a bit of a bad start here...As it's a shop shop which specialises in chicken I asked which of the salads in the salad bar were vegetarian, (also they had a pesto pasta salad so it's possible that other salads also contained non-vegetarian ingredients). The first person I asked didn't know, asked someone else and she told me that they were all vegetarian in a way

As it's a shop shop which specialises in chicken I asked which of the salads in the salad bar were vegetarian, (also they had a pesto pasta salad so it's possible that other salads also contained non-vegetarian ingredients). The first person I asked didn't know, asked someone else and she told me that they were all vegetarian in a way which made me feel that she felt I was a little dumb for asking. She didn't even mention the pesto pasta so either they're using vegetarian pesto or she has no idea that pesto contains non vegetarian ingredients. Whatever, plenty of vegetarians still aren't sure about such things and not everyone takes the whole 'no dead animals' thing so strictly.
The next step was to choose the salads. I ordered a medium box ($55) with three different salads: mixed bean, potato and asparagus and pepper and corn. Actually I didn't see anywhere how many varieties you can choose, maybe more is ok, but three seemed about right. The next minor irritation came with the payment. As it's the first time I've used the shop I was unaware that you're given a slip of paper which you need to take to a separate cashier to pay and then you can pick up your food. I didn't know. And the server didn't tell me until an awkwardly long period of time had gone on. In one two-minute encounter I was made to feel like a bit of a wassack twice.
Service aside, the salad was really good, especially the sweetcorn, they shave whole sides off the cob so that you get slabs of sweet and juicy corn. The potato and asparagus salad was light on the asparagus but to be honest I ordered it for the mayonnaisey potatoes and they were lovely, they'd used a floury variety which is much more suitable for potato salad in my opinion and there was a hint of peppery/mustardy heat in the sauce. The bean salad was exactly what I wanted in a bean salad, a mild taste but fuller texture to go with the peppers and onions. I would say $55 is ever so slightly more than I would choose to pay for that quantity but I guess it's not bad value really.
