Assorted Mushrooms

From my many minutes of diligent internet researching, I learned that Yunnan cuisine involves many mushrooms, as there a large number of wild, edible mushrooms that grow in the province. The menu has a section devoted to wild mushrooms, but seeing as how none of us knew what a sarcodon or a ganbajun was, we played it safe with the assorted mushrooms. They were pretty good-- nice texture, just enough seasoning to bring out the mushroom flavor.
Yunnan Steamed Pot Chicken

Another big Yunnan thing from Jianshui province is the steamed pot chicken. Again, decision procedure was relatively low-level: we got the "Yunnan Steamed Pot Chicken", because, y'know, Yunnan restaurant. It comes in a ceramic pot. The broth was not substantially different from a Western chicken broth: salty, chicken-y goodness. On a rainy day it was a nice choice. The chicken bits I thought were a tad overcooked, and it's Chinese food so obviously they had bone shards in them. I liked this dish but it's not very exciting.

This on the other hand was exciting: pan fried milk cake. It looks a little like haloumi, and had a very cheesy smell to it. Nice and crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside. Milky and a little bit cheesy. Definitely worth a try, not sure I'd get it again.

We were a little hung up on the vegetables, so we decided to go for the classic string beans and pork. I will say that the plain version of this dish just doesn't do it for me anymore. The Sichuan version with peppercorns and chilis is awesome, but this was just salty beans with pork. Should have explored the vegetable section of the menu more.
Spicy Fried Fish

I can't find the fish on the online menu for this restaurant (it's on the Food Panda website). Our fish was both fried and labeled spicy, but nothing on the online menu fits that description. So I'll just call it Spicy Fried Fish. The reviews at the table for the fish were positive. I thought the flavor was good, the breading was nice, and the fish flesh was tasty.

BUT. I could not eat this thing. I tried and tried to get a bite without getting a mouth full of bone shards and it was impossible. No matter how small a nibble I took, from a part that looked like pure fish, tons and tons of bones. I think this was just actually fried fish bones, with some meat left on incidentally. I have a serious fear of swallowing fish bones after a professor of mine spent 8 hours waiting in an emergency room with a fish bone lodged in his throat and couldn't speak for weeks afterward.

So, as I say, everyone else liked this and I'm sure if you got it you'd probably think better of it than me. But I would stay away from it.
Fried Rice Noodles in Yunnan Style

My favorite dish of the night was the Fried Rice Noodles in Yunnan Style. It was stir-fried thick rice noodles with a nice chewiness, cabbage, ground pork, tomatoes, and egg. You don't find tomatoes often in Chinese food (OK, maybe on top of cakes), but I guess as Yunnan abuts several SE Asian countries that are somewhat more likely to use tomatoes, it makes sense. The main thing about the noodles is that the sauce they were cooked in had a great, distinctive flavor that I am having trouble describing. You won't go wrong ordering this, though.

Last thing to arrive was the check and it had a distinctly... political message to it.

All in all, I liked this place. The menu is extensive and I could come back half a dozen more times and still find new things to try. There aren't many Yunnan places around, and especially not many doing anything other than soup noodles, so I think I will come back.
題外話/補充資料: On a rainy Tuesday evening, it was easy to get a seat.
