I’ve been wanting to try this gastropub in Tai Hang for a while. The space was open with seating at tables or at the bar. Really appreciated that they didn’t pack in as many tables as possible. Being a pub, it had a long drinks menu, covering bottled beer, draft beer, wines, cocktails and coffee. The food menu was short. Some may feel it is restrictive, but I prefer simple menus. Along with the bar snacks, small plates and vegetable sides, there’s a choice of 4 sandwiches and 4 fish or meat main

Along with the bar snacks, small plates and vegetable sides, there’s a choice of 4 sandwiches and 4 fish or meat mains. It was good to see the teriyaki tempeh sandwich for those who don’t eat meat. I would like to try that one day but this time, I ordered the fried chicken sandwich to try the pickled ginger coleslaw. Calling this a sandwich is misleading - it was huge, there was no way anyone can eat this with their hands without making a mess! The brioche bun was soft and buttery. It was hard to tell in the dark lighting, but I think the chicken was a piece of thigh meat, flattened out with the skin left on. It was juicy, fatty and perfectly fried in crispy batter. It’s not the healthiest way to eat chicken, but definitely delicious. And the pickled ginger coleslaw was really good, adding zing and crunch. This is an excellent chicken sandwich for $98. My friend opted for the flower crab pasta. He said it was ok, but there was not much crab taste. Looking at the dish, I think the thick Shanghai noodles could be too strong for the delicate crab meat. We also ordered the Tai Hang fries, which came with cumin dust, takana (a type of mustard) and dried chili sprinkled on top. It is the perfect blend of saltiness, heat and umami, that made them incredibly moreish and satisfying. The bar had an extensive range of beer, and also a small but good selection of gin, my drink of choice. The bartender was very helpful in choosing the drinks to go with the meal. The bill included a couple of drinks each. Although we enjoyed the meal and the service was great, I think the food bill was on the high side, but not unreasonably so. This place is a rarity in Hong Kong - a pub that really wants to serve great food, and for that, it deserves to do well.
