I am not in the habit of writing reviews, but this tiny little Bistro Wine Beast in Wan Chai does deserve coverage.
Four of us just experienced the October menu, which if I am not mistaken offers four of each, starters, soups, main courses and desserts.
Even though most of us added some salt to the pork rillettes, they were excellent, not overly fat and very tasty. We enjoyed that at the bar as an aperitif with a bottle of Rose de Provence, whilst we waited for our table, which was all of 5 minutes 'late'. This being a Friday evening, my friends had taken the worthwhile initiative to book. Since the whole place consists of about 20 covers between the bar-counters and the tables, a booking is indeed recommended. Oh! Ah! And the bread! Real, French style country bread, superbly fresh and tasty, an essential accompaniment for the rillettes. That same bread will of course be served throughout the meal. Only missing - although they may have been available, we didn't ask - were the cornichons (gherkins).
We then shared a terrine de foie gras, accompanied with 4 glasses of sweet white Jurançon, a must for most foies gras lovers. The terrine did not disappoint, it was tasty, cooked and seasoned to perfection, a true pleasure. It came with delicious, toasted slices of brioche and the most exquisite onion jam (probably shallots, actually, which is even better).
Three of us had the home-made duck confit as main, served with potatoes sautéed in duck fat (to die for) and small pieces of various fruit, very slightly cooked if at all - a beautiful and so fitting addition. The fourth guest had a bavette, a magnificent piece of beef, less tender than fillet but oh! so much tastier. It was cooked to perfection (blue, as requested) and was accompanied by the same sautéed potatoes. We enjoyed a good red Bourgogne with the main course.
More than satiated after all this, none of us had ordered any dessert. Our hostess then presented us with a crème brulée to share (which was more than sufficient). Flavoured with vanilla ‘de Bourbon’ (from the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion) and perfectly cooked and caramelised, I must admit it was yet another pleasure, even for me although I never eat desserts. We finished with 3 espressos.
And by the way, the special gesture from our hostess, the crème brulée, was just another of the niceties we were showered with from the moment we entered the little bistro. The hostess (owner-manager) and her staff are all so charming, smiling and knowledgeable that you never would want to leave – and of course you’ll want to return ASAP.
Don’t go there on the day you want a quiet atmosphere, comfy armchairs and sophisticated crockery. But if you are looking for a true French bistro in HK, this is THE place. It is noisy and simple, but charming. The menu is small, but the food is authentic – with some original and very welcomed ingredients added to traditional dishes – and truly delicious. The wine list is quite expansive and, as already noted by most reviewers, sold at retail prices, which makes it a bargain in a restaurant. The only item missing from my native Paris are the grumpy waiters (yes, I know a few good ones, too, even in Paris).
The bill? Well, I didn’t manage to pay my share, but I believe I saw a total just over HKD 2,000. And that’s with almost 3 bottles of wine for 4 guests. Value for money? Yes, that’s definitely another tick in the top box.
I came all the way from Sai Kung just for that meal, and I’ll do it again soon.
題外話/補充資料: Book if you can, even if some guests who arrived later than us and didn't seem to have a booking got seats at one of the bars fairly fast.
