There are a lot of cha chan tengs that have a retro decor but most of them are only recreated. But hidden away in a side street near Man Mo Temple is a true cha chan teng from the blast. 華樂冰室 has been here forever. The tiles look like they have been here since the 60s.The menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge and you pay on your way out. The egg was a fried egg with a nice runny yolk on top of a slice of buttered bread.
I had the fried spaghetti with tomato sauce. I was a bit taken aback when it arrived as I was expecting the sauce to be combined well with the pasta. Instead it was served on the side so I had to mix it up myself. It appeared the spaghetti was stir fried with soy sauce. The sauce seemed to be tomato mixed with worcestershire sauce.
Boyfriend chose that black pepper sauce. It was also placed on the side. It was very peppery.
For my meat, I chose a deep fried pork chop. It was big! And oh wow ... so juicy! The coating was crisp. A really good pork chop!
Boyfriend ordered the pan seared steak with black pepper sauce. The steak was very soft and tender. Not much meat tenderizer was detected.
The portions were big and the food was really quite good. Food was a bit different than the typical cha chan teng as well so definitely an experience.
