I was on a failed mission to eat at a different restaurant. I was tired and hungry and cranky, so I thought something straightforward was my answer. Dan Ryan's. I'd heard good things about it.I got the cajun chicken sandwich. I don't know what was supposed to make it 'cajun.' It wasn't particularly blackened, though, and it wasn't spicy or otherwised seasoned in a cajun fashion. It was just chicken-- a little smoky and a little dry.I complain far too much about mayonnaise, but in my defense, please examine this picture. There is quite a lot of mayonnaise on the bun, and just as much on the chicken itself. Then, if you flipped it over and looked at the bottom, there was just as much mayonnaise down there! Even fat Americans don't do this to their food. I scraped off what I could with my knife-- I estimate there was a quarter cup of the stuff.
Besides chicken and mayo, there was only some iceberg lettuce. A chicken sandwich could use some tomatoes-- especially a dry chicken sandwich.
Aside from the main dish, the rest was actually pretty impressive. The dill pickle was good, and that's entirely non-trivial. The coleslaw, interestingly enough, was spare on the mayo, and I liked it. The fries were nicely cooked, though not plentiful. I left thinking that maybe the sandwich was just a fluke, and that if I had ordered something else, I might have loved the place.
Hence: mixed review. I think Dan Ryan's is capable of delivering good food, though whether they ever do this is unknown to me. I have high praise for the side dishes, but the chicken sandwich could be beaten by several American fast food restaurants I can think of.
Overall: C-, almost OK.
