I've been to Cafe Deadend a few times and I've always liked their breakfast/brunch food. It was my first time coming here for lunch today and it was an absolute disappointment! It wasn't that busy when we arrived (around 1:30pm) so we were immediately seated. My husband ordered the Fried Nordic Shrimp (HKD$95) and I had the Kale Salad with Crab Meat (HKD$120). The shrimp was normal, the shrimps were deep-fried with the shell on and were tossed in salt and black pepper. It came with a mixed green salad and 2 slices of bread and a black garlic mayo. The condiment was the only thing that kinda stood out from the dish, everything else was just mediocre. The Kale Salad was the big disappointment here. The kale was overdressed; the crab meat was from a can (I actually saw the girl getting crab meat out of a can while refilling the almost empty container for the crab meat salad), tasted fishy and did not have much flavor; the avocado had brown spots on them and the portion was like an appetizer portion, or not even...it was like a kid's meal and they charge that for HKD$120!? I've been here a few times so I know the pricing here and I don't mind paying a little more as long as the food is good but HKD$120 for a small as* kale salad with a tablespoon (1.5 at most) of canned crab meat and brown avocado?? Are you kidding me? I understand kale is not cheap in HK so the cost can be high but I don't think charging your customers HKD$120 for 10 leaves of kale is fair and it's not even good.
I've also order a mocha which was quite good. The coffee, bread and breakfast here (although overpriced) are quite good but the lunch experience I had today was just terrible. If you want to price your menu in a higher range, at least put in a little more effort and heart so it's worth the value.
