Just FunI stumbled into Pazzeria one day looking for food in Soho, and have to say it was a very pleasant surprise. They have probably 15 beers on tap, and at least that many more by the bottle; all Italian and all small breweries (at least I’ve never heard of them). I’ve tried both their sour beers and if you like sour beers, they’re worth your time. Wine selection is fine too, with about 4 italian reds and 3 whites, all of which were above-average for a bar.
I love pizza and I’ll eat any basically any pizza once, but I really enjoy classic Napoletana style pizza; super-hot oven resulting in a thin-ish crust that’s a bit crispy/burnt outside but a bit chewy inside, great buffalo mozzarella sparingly used, and freshly-made (and not overly salty) tomato sauce. Toppings are fine but I prefer just a few anchovies, and maybe a shot of olives and basil. Besides Motorino and 208, which are both overpriced/overrated, I haven’t found a place in HK that can really satisfy this.
Pazzeria isn’t the exact Napoletana product, but for me, it might be even better. The pizzas are fired a bit longer than the napoletana standard (I don’t think they use a wood-fired oven), so the crust is more well-done. I actually prefer a crunchier crust all around though, so it’s perfect. The crust also retains that slight chew in the middle, so pair it up with a dish of olive oil and it’s amazing.
The pizzas are relatively small, (A typical hungry person could finish an entire one themselves) and are not heavy on the toppings, e.g. the Napoletana has chunks of buffalo mozzarella scattered all over, with some anchovies here and there. Wonderful.
We also tried some other dishes – burrata with parma ham, wild boar stew and roasted pork shank. Their burrata with ham starter was as expected – delicious, but hard to get wrong. Wild boar stew and pork shank were rich and flavorful, but not particularly memorable. Simple home-cooked style which is great, but a bit heavy on the seasoning I thought.
Whatever though, the pizza is fabulous, the alcohol is copious, and the price point is pretty much bang-on. Compared to Motorino, Pazzeria is cheaper, has more variety (food and drink), and I actually prefer the pizza style. I can't think of a pizza place i prefer going to right now. Definitely recommend giving it a shot.
