I love Men Wah Bing Teng. I love their Pineapple bun, Mexican bun, and Cocktail bun. I also think their custard bun has good crust though the filling is not my favorite. Above all, I love their Char Siu.Having been to Men Wah multiple times, I chose to try its new branch in Wan Chai. Having been to Men Wah multiple times, I chose to try its new branch in Wan Chai. The shop was located conveniently five minutes walk away from Wan Chai A3 exit, along the main road. Since it has been a while I have had nice Char Siu, this was a place to go for, a budget-friendly, great taste, and good-for-not overeat portion options.
Since restaurants now follow the regulations to install partitions, Men Wah Bing Teng also had them ready.
The Cocktail bun was great, warm and fluffy and my company, a person who grew up eating one, confirmed it tasted great.
Then we waited for a while to get our next one, the typical tea set with scrambled eggs, sausages, and a buttered toast with additional butter. This is not the “Chinese sausage” that some like me would not favor too much. It was delicious.
It took a longer while to get this already long-waited and much expected Char Siu rice. I was hearing people sitting next to us grumping for dishes that has not yet arrived, their orders probably queued for a long time or even lost. When we asked the staff if our order is placed corrertly, they seemed irritated, stared at their little POS and told us to wait. Though I really liked this dish, my appetite was almost gone by the time it came. To get this dish, we waited more than an hour since we were seated.
Even after we finished that rice, we had no clue if our drink was coming. As we asked the staff again about our drink, our message was passed to another staff and then to another senior staff who finally managed to bring this to us. So, yes, we had this not with the meal, but as some sort of dessert.
I have no doubt their food is nice, and I would come back to Men Wah for it again. However, I assure that it would not be this one in Wan Chai. I understand that the partition brought the confusion, that the staff was unfamiliar with the new table settings. On top of their ineptness, their irritation and rudeness ruined my whole dining experience. I think I can expect better from the other branches.
