Saw a good bunch of friends checking in this burger joint on fb lately, some said they have the best beef burgers in town. Unfortunately B and I quit beef years ago so we have had no desire to come until today. We wanted to have a cup of good coffee on our way to Wanchai after lunch at home and had no luck with Amical nor Rabbit Hole. We wanted to have a cup of good coffee on our way to Wanchai after lunch at home and had no luck with Amical nor Rabbit Hole. We ended up driving around the corner of Wing Fung Street where Cepage used to be located, and were attracted by the huge glass windows and high ceilings of Beef & Liberty, so decided to give it a go. The place was half full at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. The food menu is obviously burgers focused - the range is pretty fulfilling, from a variety of beef burgers to chicken to lamb to vegetarian. Had we not had lunch, we would have wanted to try the lamb burger. Well, there is always next time. Their drinks menu can easily steal the spotlight from the food’s given the comprehensive range of choices both on the alcohol and non-alcohol sides. Let’s not be side tracked. Our intention was to come for coffee, so let’s order coffee. B ordered a cappuccino, me hot chocolate and a warm skillet cookie and cream.
The warm cookie arrived in less than 2 minutes?! The server came with a pitcher of un-whipped cream and poured on top of the cookie (?!). The cookie was warm alrighty, but it was neither chewy or crispy, and tasted rather doughy. I also can’t recall ever having dessert served with liquid cream straight from the packet not whipped… The sight was unappetising enough, the taste had not helped salvage that impression; to be blunt, it’s kindda gross. We were done with the cookie WAY before our drinks came. Both a disappointment. The coffee was not properly brewed and milk not properly frothed. It was pretty flat and had no character. Hot chocolate too watering and tasted just a bit better than the instant Cadbury’s chocolate drink. On the other hand, they seem pretty particular about the quality of sugar used - they use La Perruche - that’s about the only thing I am impressed with thus far. This had not been a very good experience but I have not given up hope on them as I very well acknowledged that we may not have come for the right dishes even though the food and drinks we ordered are nothing out of the ordinary. I should come back another time for their burgers before I draw a conclusion.
