This place has great reviews, and isn't that far from where we live, so could it be our luck that there is a great Vietnamese restaurant nearby? TLDR: 見人見智!Waiting time isn't really that long, but there is no space to wait inside the restaurant. Waiting time isn't really that long, but there is no space to wait inside the restaurant. It's Hong Kong, so yeah it's understandable, but since the summer is extended this year, we really didn't enjoy it too much. It's in a strange side location, but we've recently just started exploring Mei Fu, and it's really got some gems. I have to say that the place was pretty packed even though it was 2pm, 30 minutes before their afternoon tea time, which should be less busy right? Wrong! Anyway, maybe a 10 minute wait is not that long for this place.
We ordered a classic pho with raw beef, and a curry beef noodle (only after I got it did I realize I really wanted it with the french bread, but I'm not sure if they have it anyway). We also got the big azz fried shrimp, and the super garlicy chicken wings. The curry was good, if not a little watered down. Just a tiny bit. But I think the flavor is pretty spot on. The pho though has been localized. There was a sweetness to it which I attribute to 羅白(radish?). You'd never see that in more classic vietnamese fare. We also had to ask for the 芽菜, and they also didn't give us the lime and peppers. Basically the pho didn't have the standard bowl of veggies to go along with it. Another HK adaptation I think.
Well, a little detour about my vietnamese experience. I've had Vietnamese food only in Los Angeles, Westminster, and other parts of California. And it's pretty damn good. People say it's better than Vietnamese food in Vietnam (some Vietnamese people told me) because the ingredients are better. I tend to think that for Hong Kong Cafe's there too, but that's another discussion/story for another time.
The shrimp, now you will see that it's the same price as the lobster. Huh? Anyway, since we decided on it earlier, we stuck with the shrimp. I really don't like the tiny lobsters anyway. And the right choice it was! The shrimp was very fresh, there's a lot of 膏 or whatever goodness that was at the head part, and the meat just was easily separable from the shell (cooked just right and fresh). Flavor was great.
The wings (fried garlic version) were amazing as well. It was pretty drenched in oil and garlic, so if you don't like excessive amounts oil or garlic, then stay away. We loved it, and it came out piping hot. Another style of wings in Hong Kong that tastes amazing! Anyway, it was way too much food. We had no chance in finishing it. For drinks we had the vietnamese coffee, and that was pretty on point. We'll definitely come back again, if we're not lured away by another great Hong Kong restaurant!
The place is pretty clean and well lit, and the service is quick and relatively friendly. And that comes with no 10% service charge, which is rare for most restaurants here. Another plus. The untensils and cups also looked well washed. I don't think you'll normall spend 125 per head here. We just ordered too much. The noodles can get a little pricey though (normal HK standards). It's 65 I think for the number 1 火車頭. I didn't take any pictures because there are plenty good ones already.
