Hunghom Cafe, not locate in Hunghom (but apparently they do have branches there) is your typical cha chan teng. Well, except it's pretty clean with a cafe like decor. You can rank this as one of those new styled cha chan tengs. Seating is also spacious and there is no grumpy waiter standing over you pressuring you to order the minute you sit down. Menu is also in Chinese and English. However, at night they have a special menu in Chinese only that includes a rice and Chinese main dish. They gave u
They gave us a bowl of the daily soup before we even ordered. This was not too bad. A savory pork and carrot soup. They only gave the soup and none of the ingredients so I can only guess what it was.
We shared two dishes. This was on the evening specials menu which was located on a wall in Chinese only. It was braised short ribs in a claypot with mushrooms. ($83). The portion size was generous with a lot of short ribs. But some of the bigger pieces were not really cooked through and thus tough and chewy near the bone area. But the meat was super soft as it had been treated beforehand with baking soda or some sort of meat tenderizer. It was a bit heavy handed on this as the taste of the meat was nonexistent. The sauce was a very salty and just tasted like MSG.
The other dish was on their usual menu. This was stir fried garoupa with bell peppers with rice noodles ($51). Originally it was vermicelli but boyfriend doesn't like vermicelli. The waiter was good enough to change it o flat rice noodles at no extra charge. This fish was a bit too mushy. This dish was super salty as well. Though portion size was huge. We couldn't finish it so I took the rest home.
Dishes were a bit too salty for my taste but boyfriend thought it was fine. Portions were large so good value for money. Might return again as it's rare for me to find clean cha chan tengs with an English menu.
