Bistro du Vin was once a great little eatery in the heart of Kennedy Town. Seating is cozy, food was once excellent. At one point, I swore that they made the best French onion soup in the city. Their duck confit was rich and their braised beef cheek melted in your mouth.

Unfortunately, today’s experience was far from my last visit, which was probably about half a year ago. As I sat down, I did notice that the menu had changed slightly. They no longer had the braised beef cheek or the duck confit available. Nonetheless I proceeded to order the onion soup, the cote de boeuf and their special of the day, which was a Fisherman’s stew (for a party of 4). Without asking any questions (which I should have done) I assumed it was a bouillabaisse type seafood dish.

The onion soup came first and to my surprise, it was a small piece of bread with a tiny bit of cheese on top floating in a clear broth. This was a far contrast to the rich bovine broth with melted cheese on top I was expecting. Puzzled, I asked the waiter who then went on to explain that the chef had changed and the new chef uses a chicken stock and prefers a lighter taste. I must admit I had always thought French onion soup is made from beef stock and not chicken. Needless to say, it was rather disappointing.

The disappointment did not stop there. Next up was the Fisherman’s Stew. It was basically seafood in a clear kelp broth. To be fair, the seafood was fresh but it really didn’t seem like much for $900.

Finally the Cote du boeuf. The one dish which I did not have any complaints. Meat was grilled well and the sides of mashed potatoes were very buttery.
