西香記 is a restaurant with a strange name. The English name listed on Openrice is Chang'an Taste but for some crazy reason, the restaurant outside is called Moo. I guess due to the curiosity of the restaurant name, we decided to give it a try for dinner. After a bit of thought, we figured the name Moo probably derives from what they serve, a Chinese style burger or Rou Jia Mo ... I guess in Mandarin, "mo" sounds like "moo".The restaurant inside looked small there was an extra room in the back with
The restaurant inside looked small there was an extra room in the back with more seating. It had a strange astronaut on the wall. Seating is fairly spacious with a few comfortable tables and bench seating as well.
Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge. We discovered they served Shanxi Cuisine in a more hip modern surrounding. Prices aren't expensive and you order and pay at the cashier up front. You the pick up your order when your number is called out.
As they don't offer sets or discounts on drinks and we couldn't spot a water machine, we ordered two drinks. Soymilk ($12) and Plum Juice ($12). These were ok. The plum juice was perfectly sour. The soymilk was a bit on the bland side.
Boyfriend ordered something spicy. This was the Homemade Noodle with Saute Spicy Chicken ($68). You get a choice of thick noodle or Biang Biang. He wanted just the thick noodle. This was pretty spicy even for him. The table next to us also remarked it was pretty spicy. The chicken was tender. If you can eat spicy, this is for you.
As I can't eat spicy, I had Biang Biang Noodle with Minced Pork in Soybean Paste ($58). I liked it. A refreshing mix of thick flat noodle with crunchy fresh vegetables and salty mince pork meat. Portions was quite a bit and very filling.
We shared a "Chinese Burger" and chose Crispy Pork with Cucumber Moo ($30). You can choose non crispy and crispy but we finally decided on the crispy as we wanted it toasted a bit. It was pretty good. The pork meat was juicy and packed with flavor. The crunch of the flatbread gave it texture. As we chose it with cucumber, it gave it freshness and balanced out the saltiness of the meat filling. I loved it and would come back for this.
Fairly inexpensive and place was tidy. A hip way to eat popular street food that is commonly found in mainland China for the Hong Kong masses. Would probably come again if in the area and wanted a casual bite.
