An impromptu meeting led my dear friend and I to Chocolux Café at PP3. We were lucky to find a table in the small 4-table café. The counter showed a display of gorgeous cupcakes, chocolate desserts, and a variety of macarons. Menu options include both savory and sweet items, but what’s the point of going to Chocolux if you aren’t ordering chocolate food?We settled on two tea sets: a banana chocolate crepe with a hot 72% chocolate ($58) and a molten chocolate cake set with a cold 52% chocolate

We settled on two tea sets: a banana chocolate crepe with a hot 72% chocolate ($58) and a molten chocolate cake set with a cold 52% chocolate ($58 +$10 for ice-cream on the cake). The drinks arrived promptly and I was surprised how frothy my ice chocolate was. Even with 52% chocolate the cocoa taste was already intense enough for me, and I saw froth and bubbles clinging on the glass even after I finished the drink. I would have preferred my ice chocolate to be colder. Perhaps they should come up with a frappe for the summer.
The banana chocolate crepe was much bigger in size than we anticipated. The crepe was thin though not really eggy or buttery in flavor. I guess that’s not the point, as they provided abundant banana and chocolate sauce to dominate every bite in your mouth. But talking about strong flavor, the crepe wasn’t even close to the molten cake, which came at the end, hot and fresh. We expected lava explosion upon cutting into the molten cake, and it happened! I am no molten cake expert, but the gooey chocolate sauce remained a certain level of viscosity and wasn’t like thin-out chocolate liquid. The chocolate lava flavor wasn’t syrupy or plainly sweet, but with the slight bitter chocolate taste balanced with just enough sweetness. The freshly baked cake had a crispy exterior and was quite moist inside, which was a blessing as I really hate dry crumbly cake. Afterall, this is a place that specializes in chocolate, so I imagine they use better quality chocolate for their molten cakes than most cafes which give you more like a piece “chocolate-colored” cake with a sweet syrup inside. The ice-cream wasn’t really that strong in flavor, so it was there to provide a contrast temperature if anything.
The first few bites were really enjoyable, but with two desserts and two strong chocolate drinks, we both felt overwhelmed by chocolaty –“goodness” (太漏 & 太滯)and couldn’t finish the desserts.
The service was courteous and I definitely appreciate that everything was freshly made to order. I know I am just not born to be a chocoholic, so for people like me, it’s probably a good idea to share a set. For those sweet fanatics 甜魔, that may just be the warm up.
