I tried the coffee at Café 103 upstairs, which also belonged to Ritz Carlton. I was impressed and thought Ritz Carlton served the same great fresh ground coffee in all its restaurants. But when I came to The Lounge and Bar for afternoon tea, it turned out not to be the case. Not only did the levels of coffee differ, the qualities of food and levels of comfort were quite diverse, despite the same good view and service.
First of all, when we arrived at the lobby on the 102nd floor, there were already friendly waiters greeting us. They were from different countries but were all polite, especially the Japanese waitress who served us. Although her English was not very fluent, her keen service made us feel like in Japan, which was a pleasant surprise~
We got a window seat. Since the view was Victoria Harbour from the top of ICC, you can imagine the splendid broadness. Coupled with large floor-to-ceiling glass windows and spacious setting, the environment was unbeatable. Not sure if I was too big (which should not be the case ), as I found the seat was actually too small to fit in comfortably after sitting for a while. Some things are more beautiful from a distance...
Afternoon tea was in a classical three tier stand, plus drinks. I missed the fragrance of coffee on the 103rd floor, so I ordered coffee this time, and my friend ordered iced lemon tea. The iced lemon tea was nice, but the coffee was sour, unlike the one upstairs which was only aromatic but not sour. I asked the waitress if the coffee here was different from that upstairs. She politely responded that the one upstairs was fresh ground coffee, and that of this floor was made by the coffee machine with another kind of beans. She offered another cup for me. I actually wondered if she would give me another kind of coffee, but it turned out to be the same, so it was as sour as the previous one... Finally, I used sugar to cover up the sourness. The service of the waitress was really Japanese. She constantly apologized, and while she could not really change the drinks served, she would continue to serve the same thing until you were satisfied (well…). Some people may not mind the sour taste, but this cup of coffee was not my cup of tea (yea, yea, I know coffee is not tea). I just wondered why the same hotel offered different coffee on two adjacent floors.
In terms of food, they were dry. They were like the middle-aged who do not keep their bodies in shape. Maybe our dishes were exposed in the air for some time, but I saw another bunch of diners at a nearby table leaving without finishing their food, so probably they also encountered the same situation. Nevertheless, the scones were worth mentioning. Although they were also very dry, the fragrance of butter survived through the dryness. I don’t really want to talk about other food though…
My conclusion is, if you enjoy scenery and good service without caring the price of afternoon tea at a hotel, you can come and enjoy a leisurely afternoon.
