Walking around the Sai Ying Pun area, we discovered a queue of people at a shop selling old style Hong Kong baked goods. But it seemed everyone on line was just ordering one item. Put chai ko. Those steamed pudding cakes made of rice. A traditional Hong Kong street snack, steamed in ceramic bowls. Why would people be lining up here for this? Something that can be found in other areas of Hong Kong. This is the first time I've ever encountered a queue for this.As any good foodie can tell you, alway

As any good foodie can tell you, always follow what the people who live in the area eat and you can't go wrong.
One put chai ko costs $2 for one. He ordered two flavors: brown was traditional brown sugar. White was coconut. Boyfriend added a sticky rice cake with red bean paste for $3.
Definitely the most smallest put chai ko I've ever seen. They were mini in size. I guess a good thing about it that you can eat a few and not be too full for the next snack down the street! Tastewise, they were ok. Soft and semi sweet. The red beans were soft and not chalky in taste like I usually fear in put chai go.
The sticky rice cake was ok. It was very chewy and the red bean paste was fairly sweet. I think I needed a drink at that point. Interesting old school type place. Worth a detour if in the area if you want to eat something tradtional. Though no English as everything was in Chinese, you can just point as everything is nicely displayed.
