住家菜 (English name: Home Feel) is a place I've been to a lot in the past as it's located in Causeway Bay. Serving dishes that you'd probably find in any typical Chinese family home at reasonable prices, it was something I ate at for that taste of home. Boyfriend went to it once with me and he agreed. The food was good, not spectacular but at least had the feeling of home.Much to our surprise when we saw this in Tsim Sha Tsui! I had no idea they had a branch. So, we decided to just eat here for
Much to our surprise when we saw this in Tsim Sha Tsui! I had no idea they had a branch. So, we decided to just eat here for dinner.
The menu is in Chinese but they have an English menu available. Ordering is done by checking off a paper menu that is in Chinese only. Or just order off the bilingual menu if you can't read Chinese. They have a board with the daily special items such as fish and daily soup that is in Chinese only.
We ordered half a Grandma Chicken ($60). This was pretty much promoted to us and stressed there may not be that many portions left. This was not stressed in the Causeway Bay branch so we gave it a try here. It was ok. Portion was generous but we were still able to finish it. The meat was moist and tender. The sauce was a bit familiar though. with a strong oyster sauce flavor.
Honey Pork Chops ($78) was the ther item we ordered. The pork chops were very soft and not chewy at all without the taste of meat softner. The sauce was sweet and sticky. Reminded me of the Lee Kum Kee pre-made sauce I sometimes use when I'm too lazy to stir together my own. The onions were sweet though few on the raw side so a bit strong. Boyfriend loves raw onions so he gobbled them up.
It ended with a free dessert of pumpkin sago. This was not sweet at all. I was fine with it but boyfriend felt it was bland. I guess it was. But it was free so ... why complain?
Food was ok but I felt the Causeway Bay branch tasted better. Service was really rushed. I don't know why as it wasn't full house. But it did feel like something you'd find in any one's home.
