Came here around 5pm to find a que of about 10-20 ppl...no problem I thought because a lot of these people were here to order... We decided to get 12 cakes as it was for a dinner party:-Chocolate Truffle This was the one of the groups favourites. It was a lot like Fine Foods' version, except it tasted more like Ferroro Rocher rather than pure dark Chocolate, as there was I suspect, the use of praline... Anyway, for many, this cake is very indulgent and quite rich - you must be a chocoholic + app
We decided to get 12 cakes as it was for a dinner party:-
Chocolate Truffle
This was the one of the groups favourites. It was a lot like Fine Foods' version, except it tasted more like Ferroro Rocher rather than pure dark Chocolate, as there was I suspect, the use of praline... Anyway, for many, this cake is very indulgent and quite rich - you must be a chocoholic + appreciate praline to be able to enjoy this!
The outer layer was a dark chocolate ganache with the inside a filling of more solid chocolate ganache and choco/praline mousse.
Green T Opera
This was the second most popular, but my personal favourite. At first I thought it was pure green tea but then I noticed a brown layer - a thick chocolate ganache! The green tea layers was pungent and bitter enough to balance out the sweetness in the ganache, green tea mousse and sponge layers.
Choc Hazelnut Crunch cake
This was quite a piece of art. The bottom was of a biscuit-like texture hazelnut cake, then there were hazelnuts. On top was a chocolate ganache-like layer, followed by a hazelnut mousse and thin piece of dark chocolate (think Lindt swiss-thins!) and then another two repeating layers. Eaten together there was a fantastic range of textures - thick and smooth, crisp, crunchy and biscuit-y However, the taste was not particularly surprising.
American Cheesecake
This was a lot better than I expected. I pictured it to taste like New York - dense and sweet with the sour cream top. It was dense alright, but not as dense as the New York version, and incredibly smooth. Sweetness was perfect and the cream cheese flavour was very present. The base stayed slightly crunchy and thin enough not to be too 'rich'. I think this may have just beat MO's!
Blueberry Cheesecake
Blueberry Cheescake was sadly not amazing. It had the same biscuit/nut base of the american cheese, but the middle part was more mousse-like - like local bakery-versions of the 'blueberry cheesecake', and topped with a very ordinary blueberry sauce.
Cream Horn
I have to say this was also quite disappointing. Although appealing to the eye, the 'horn' was no longer crisp - yes, we did have it after a several hours of purchasing, but I expected maybe a layer inside to prevent the custard from ruining the horn? Anyway, the custard was good but could be better if it was more creamier and less sweet.
Mango Napoleon
This was quite similar to the one I had at Fine Foods, except less fruit was used here? I think I prefer Fine Food's, because the puff pastry layers and custard fared slightly better. [I went to Royal Garden after Tony W. had left so I wonder if it was his recipe they were using?)
Berries Napoleon
This was one of the most appealing pastries - the different berries gave a variety of colours along with the golden puff pastry and custard. However, the puff pastry layers were not coated with the glaze as in the mango napoleon for some strange reason and so the puff pastries weren't crisp at all when I had it....disappointingly soggy.
Raspberry Napoleon (Round)
This round napoleon was still very crisp and fresh when we ate it. The raspberries weren't sour like it often can be - a sign of quality control and good fruit-inspection by the patisserie! The custard was again, the same as the napoleon and cream horn above.
Strawberry Napoleon
Quite similar to the mixed berries napoleon above.
Overall a very tasty cake experience except probably for the few soggy pastries (will try the napoleon again but next time right after purchasing), and I handled all the sugar surprisingly well despite having had dinner before - didn't go hyper nor experience a drop in energy levels a couple hours later .
