In one of those fortunate coincidences, we are staying on the border of To Kwa Wan and Hung Hom. To Kwa Wan is a bit hard for a non Cantonese speaker but Hung Hom is an excellent hub for food, two openrice winners in one tiny street being an example of the excellent food available. One of my English speaking compatriots rates these as the best Dim Sum in Hong Kong. I don't have enough experience to verify this but it's certainly the best I've had in two visits here. The Xiao Long Bao were perfect. Flavoursome with that squirt of soup that was gorgeous. Pork fried dumplings, buns and chive bread was superb.
A big plus - though it was a tiny place, the lady owner was very warm to a family with 3 kids & a baby and invited this daunting (to HKers) party in without hesitation. Despite our language differences, her warmth and good service never faltered. We felt comfortable, ate like kings for no money and left as customers who'll come back before we fly back.
Kids loved the food too, which is always a good sign of something super good.
I'm tempted to try the Michelen starred ones just to compare, but this is the type of place which makes a holiday, a little discovery of something local, real & out of the tourist traps. Oh, and good value.
