We came here full of expectation when the Japanese waitress picked up the phone to take our reservation, and also the decor was very cozy and reminded us of the little izakaya we go to in Japan. We weren't super hungry, but was craving for a bowl of ramen to remind us of Japan, so we ordered a spicy ramen and a Higomonzu ramen, which had a full feature on the menu next to Nagasaki ramen. And we threw in an okonomiyaki for good measure. The Higomonzu ramen had pork knuckle and cha shiu and some pr
The Higomonzu ramen had pork knuckle and cha shiu and some pretty raw cabbage leaves, in a milky broth that looked enticing but sadly lacked the meaty flavour that a tonkotsu should have. The noodles were a bit overcooked and were limp and straightened out. The spicy ramen was even more upsetting. The vegetables came in a sauce that was gooey and thick, but sadly lacked any spiciness except for the few slivers of red peppers. The noodles were a bit better, but only as good as a packet of ramen can get (I could do the same at home, probably better). Didn't take photos, but the photos would be misleading you anyway.
The okonomiyaki was too doughy, but at least it had some taste to it compared with the ramen. I might just give it another try because the other yakitori items and small dishes looked like they would fare better, and also there's a jazz night on the last Saturday of each month. No cover charge. At least if the food's still not good, there's free live music.
