Hong Kong has lacked a decent BBQ joint since the likes of 85 South and blue smoke shut their doors a few years ago! Hong Kong has lacked a decent BBQ joint since the likes of 85 South and blue smoke shut their doors a few years ago!
Since I first heard the rumours about Smoke and Barrel opening I was quick to follow them on social media with their promise of a pit master hailing from America and a smoker being shipped over to provide the juicy smoked BBQ goodness we are love.
Booked in for their brunch, we arrived and were walked through the menu by their lovely and attentive staff, the only positive part of this experience.
The starters came along with a big side of DISAPPOINTMENT, the highlight was the salad and salmon! The tatter tots were covered in a super sweet sauce, the beans were again super sweet and lacked any smoky flavour.
Moving onto the mains and the disappointment continued. most of the party ordered the smoked platter, it’s arrived and consisted of brisket drier than Gandhi’s flip flop, a very small portion of pulled pork covered in a horrendous sweet vinegar sauce and ONE rib that was actually ok but only ONE!!! Wtf!
Desserts came and as my wife described them, “have the escaped from a retirement home?!” The ice cream and cookie was watery and bland and the chocolate cake was truly awful.
The bill came and at $480 pp excluding alcohol. After showing so much promise on their IG of juicy, succulent meats and care and attention to creating an authentic taste we left wondering why there was just a complete lack of love from the food.
Some body please step up to the challenge.
