My friend and I decided to meet up for dinner last week, and he let me choose the venue. I decided to pick Hallasan Korean BBQ since it's famous for the Jeju black pork. I'm not a big fan of pork normally, but I remembered having the Jeju black pork in Jeju, and it was pretty delicious! We booked a table for the 4 of us ahead of time, and three of us got to the restaurant on time and were waiting for the last person to arrive to place our order. While we were waiting, the servers kept coming over to try to turn on our stove even before we placed our order.
After the fourth person arrived, we looked at the menu and decided to order the thick cut pork belly along with a beef set for 2. We thought that we would just order additional items later on. As soon as we placed the order, the server turned on our stove.
The chopsticks and sauce dish were already in our place setting, but we had to ask them for our plates. They gave us plates that had a dipping sauce in them, so we asked for additional plates that were empty, so we could have the salad, and the servers gave us a glare like we were being completely unreasonable.
The stove had the egg and cheese compartments filled as soon as the first person in our party arrived, and also the various side dishes and a salad were served at that time. There were free refills on the side dishes but not the salad.

There were free refills for the lettuce wraps, so we asked for a refill when we were down to one and were told that the container must be empty for it to be refilled. Actually, each side dish had to be completely finished before they would give us a refill. The four of us thought the policy was quite unflexible even if they didn't want us to waste food.
After our pork belly was served, the server put it on the grill and in like a minute, there was heavy smoke coming from the stove, and my brother and I started coughing. One server came by and turned down the stove and said the smoke is normal and walked away. A few minutes later, it was still smoking like crazy, and another server came over and swapped out the stove saying that it was too hot from being turned on too early. This server was the nicest one that night and helped us grill the pork belly.

After the first two items, we decided to order a few more things. We ordered the steak tartar, a rice roll, rice cake, and an order of short ribs. I also ordered the strawberry marshmallow beverage.

As the night proceeded, we could see that the smoke wasn't being sucked into the exhaust, so we moved the exhaust around and realized that it wasn't pointing directly as the stove, hence, it wasn't working properly. We could see that there was a good amount of smoke coming from other tables as well, so for a Korean BBQ restaurant, their ventilation system is pretty poor. We definitely smelled like our food when we left the restaurant.
For $300+ per person, Hallasan Korean BBQ gave us food that wasn't any special and service that was hit and miss (more miss than hit, 1 of the servers was really good, but 2 were really rude). I don't see myself coming back anytime soon even if I want to reminisce about the day I spent in Jeju on my cruise trip.
