I was in the area to do some work and about to buy some Egg Tarts again from 金華冰廳, which I enjoyed: http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2022064This shop is a block or 2 closer to central Mongkok and caught my eye before getting there. EGG TART 1 -
All Egg Tarts are made-in-house and in small batches here. The 酥皮 Pastry on the tart is more of a Filo-Pastry type, meaning its layers are individually papery and less 鬆化 than the middle ground that's achieved by 金華冰廳 or 榮華茶餐廳 (尖沙咀). On the other extreme of the spectrum its completely opposite to the highly 鬆化, melts-in-the-mouth version at 新華茶餐廳. Each of these styles are ENJOYABLE to me in their own way.
The one here resembles more of the healthier Restaurant versions. The pastry however has nearly no buttery taste, but more of a lard's taste. On the positive side, its not too oily at all nor lumped together like Siamese twins, like for example the 1 occasion I tried it at 豪華餅店 which was disappointing. Yet somehow I wished the pastry here had a bit more buttery aroma and taste!
What excels here is the Egg Custard. Its quite eggy and really natural tasting. In this respect, it beats all the above competitions.
EGG TART 2 -
The above was quite good, but I ordered a 2nd hotter one later and this was even better!
HK MILK TEA -
This is suppose to be quite good in this restaurant too, according to newspaper clippings outside! It turned out above-average with some tea taste on this occasion but not aromatic. NOTE: in my experience, the HK Milk Tea can taste quite different each time even within the same restaurant, in fact sometimes I order 2-3 at the same time with others but all cups have slight variations, enough to skewer the judgment of the shop's tea.
Apart from the actual Tea's variations, the other important consideration is that the Evaporated Milk is poured via free-hand rather than pre-measured, meaning the Milk to Tea proportioning can vary by upto 5-10% easily, which also has a multiplying effect since the tea volume is constantly fixed! 5% more milk will have more than 5% dilution as a net result. Anyway, in my opinion - one can never fully judge the HK Tea with just 1 visit, but by understanding the 茶膽 style of the shop you get a bigger picture! Here - I think it doesn't have much more potential, but its enjoyable in a sense

EGG TARTS HERE ARE REALLY ENJOYABLE, ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE TRIED IN HONG KONG. ITS NOT PERFECT BUT IF YOU CAN ENJOY THIS TYPE OF FLAKY PASTRY JUST LIKE I DO SOMETIMES - ITS NEARLY PERFECT FOR WHAT IT IS! I NEED TO COME BACK TO TRY THEIR CURRY AND OTHER PASTRY PUFFS, ALSO THEIR CHICKEN PIES AND OTHER BREAD SOON!
PERSONALLY: Egg Tart High '4' to Mid '5'. Tea Low '4'
