As its name suggests, Penthouse is perched on the top floor of Soundwill Plaza and is an upbeat dining establishment most appropriate for casual gatherings. We walked in on a Saturday evening and the place looked a little gloomy with very few tables occupied. The menu looks like a balance of American and (continental) European and offers some classics and a handful of eye-catching dishes that you wouldn't easily find elsewhere. Waiting staff were reasonably attentive, albeit a bit clumsy at time

We walked in on a Saturday evening and the place looked a little gloomy with very few tables occupied. The menu looks like a balance of American and (continental) European and offers some classics and a handful of eye-catching dishes that you wouldn't easily find elsewhere. Waiting staff were reasonably attentive, albeit a bit clumsy at times and definitely not prepared to converse with diners as hosts, a shame given that hospitality could make all the difference for a restaurant like Penthouse.

In general, this was certainly not the best food and experience we could buy with the same amount of money in the area, but we don't regret giving it a shot. I wouldn't recommend a friend to come over for special occasions and romantic dates, but for casual meals this would be more than fine.

N.B. Interestingly, Penthouse refuses to offer "hot water" for free (and this probably wasn't to stop diners from not paying for bottled still water as we did order beer and bottled water). While a second host came over to explain that hot water would cost us HK$20, he offered to serve complimentary "warm water".

Bread with pesto sauce
Very nice pesto sauce and the bread was perfect.

Scallop Carpaccio, $198
While avocado dices were a welcome addition, the granny smith (apple) sauce drizzled all over was questionable. This is one of those creative touches that won't be appreciated as much by actual diners as their descriptions might otherwise suggest. It reminds me of a recent meal at New York's newly opened Dadong (Beijing cuisine) where the chef combined blueberries with fish in one dish and it was really much more gimmicky than it was palatable.

Prime rib-eye steak, 12oz, $468
The rib-eye was 28 days wet-aged, USDA prime and Spanish in origin. It was nicely prepared and tasted fine. The roasted garlic (whole) on the side was very much appreciated. We do, however, suspect that our side of truffled fries was purchased from the nearest McDonald's.

"NYC" chopped salad, $178
A pretty limited and disappointing salad for a restaurant of this caliber. It was literally three pieces of mid-sized prawns drowned in oil sitting atop a small pile of chopped romaine lettuces. There were other ingredients but they were very limited in scope and portion. I would also suggest presenting this on a flat plate.
