Walking through the alley behind the wonderfully named Fuk Man Road in search of something cheap & cheerful, we were drawn to this place because it was bright, clean, crowded and had huge photos with English names for all of the dishes. The design of the place is more modern and the place seems cleaner than many of the hole in the wall joints nearby. At 2PM on a Saturday afternoon, it was close to full so we had to share a table. The woman at the cash register asked if we "knew how to eat this food." I wasn't sure how to answer, at which point she asked if it was our first time there, which it was. She explained that after we have looked at the menu, I should go up to the counter to order the food.
The specialty here is noodle soups - you can choose from 8 or 10 different types of noodle and then from two dozen or more things to put in the soup. The counter is an assembly line of sorts. The first woman cooks the noodles, then hands it off to two other women in front of a steam table with all of the choices in front of them - if, like me, your Cantonese sucks, you can point at the menu or point at the food itself. Then they toss in some soup & curry and carry the bowl over to your table for you.
My girlfriend and I both went for hor fun with fish dumplings and fish balls; she then added in some pork skin while I went for fried tofu, green pepper and eggplant with fish. The place has a large selection of bubble teas and drinks - my gf went for iced coffee with pearls, I went for a melon shake with jelly. Our bill came out to $75.
This is not gourmet stuff, it's comfort food, and for what it is, it hit the spot. We were both very satisfied.
Unlike the other reviews, all of the staff were friendly and helpful to us even though the place was busy. We will definitely go back.
