Hanami is a neat and cozy corner for serious sushi and sashimi. Food was presented course by course even for a simple and quick lunch, and despite it being a Sunday sashimi was fresh. Hospitality is genuine and professional, and waiting staff are attentive to small details. We had a 12-piece sushi set ($380) and an assorted sashimi set ($360). Mine was the sashimi set. It came with a salad, small appetizer (seaweed), steamed egg, and miso soup with deep-fried tofu (abura-age).
All of the raw fish were commonly seen mass favourites, roughly two bites each of: Scallop (Hotate-gai), Botan Shrimp (Botan-ebi), Sea Urchin (Uni), Amberjack (Buri), Ark Shell (Aka-gai) and Pink Fatty tuna (Otoro).
The buri was my favourite today, creamy and tender with a rich flavor profile. Akagai was crunchy, juicy and and refreshing. Sea urchin was nearly perfect—sweet without any fishiness, but not as creamy as Bafun uni. In general the entire platter had been wonderful. Fair for the price.
To end our lunch, we were offered a mug of freshly brewed coffee. It was fairly good, bold and strong, and definitely not UCC (I have nothing against UCC—it just isn’t my kind of coffee).
It seems probable that we will return for dinner to see how the chef fares.
