This review isn’t really fair. Grand Central positions itself as contemporary casual American, sadly something that in HK I don’t expect to be very good. Both supply and demand are lacking (Even Dan Ryan’s is gone!). I should be pleased to find any restaurant that can offer even a hazy facsimile of good burger / salad/ brunch dining. Sadly though, Grand Central fails to deliver even on these subterranean expectations. The atmosphere is very  pleasant, a breezy, high-ceilinged affair in Civic Squa

The atmosphere is very  pleasant, a breezy, high-ceilinged affair in Civic Square, Elements, Kowloon. TVs and big tables for families and parties; there was a kids birthday party the same day we were there, and it’s spacious enough that we weren’t bothered at all. Service is great and we didn’t wait long for anything.

Brunch menu is extensive and we ordered a pretty broad variety of food. I’m sad to report however, that of all the dishes we ordered, the only one we would consider trying again was the burger.

Pancakes – took a post-picture but the pre-picture was equally dismal. Pale, dense, and rubbery with two equally miserable strips of bacon. I took a bite and spit it out. My friend made it through of half of them somehow.

Bacon burger – I don’t eat beef but my friends said this was actually good. Solid burger and fries – the advertised house specialty

“Spanish“ brunch skillet – was completely unoffensive but not particularly memorable. Breakfast skillet with two eggs, boiled new potatoes, cheapo chorizo, olives, and four slices of out-of-place parma ham

Clam Chowder – I admit it tasted a lot better than it looked – actually clam-filled. A bit thick but not bad.

Cobb Salad – ugh. If you put Cobb salad on your menu, you better live up to it. The quintessential American entrée salad, which can be made a million ways with whatever at hand is most delicious, wasn’t even chopped! Jack cheese cubes instead of crumbled blue cheese? Madness! And what was with the flavorless Ranch dressing? Ranch with a Cobb?? I'm getting dizzy with first-world outrage Was edible but that’s all I will give it.

Strawberry Milkshake – don’t like milkshakes but friends said it tasted too artificial.

Sure,  mediocrity of western food in HK is nothing new, and in fact is the norm. But we should demand better, especially for HKD 370/person. This category of food;  burgers, salads, soups, bar-food; is not hard to do well, but like all food, require a baseline commitment to ingredients, preparation  and freshness. Grand Central has all the elements to be a fine American bistro/diner but they’re just not there. I do wish them luck, because HK needs a place like this.
