I haven't been to many Hunan places, but a number of people have told me that Cafe Hunan was really good. Since I'm not that far away, I decided to give it a go.The first thing that arrived was the shredded potato. I got this because the SCMP review said their potato starter was the spiciest thing they got. This wasn't spicy. Acceptable, C+
Next we got the stir fried tofu with pork. Hunan-style tofu is always a big draw, and I was particularly excited by the fresh chilis. The tofu and pork are very good, though the pork is meagre. The chilis are great vegetables, crunchy and quite meaty, but they are not spicy. I started to worry there'd be no spice in the meal! Good, B
Next came the stir fried cabbage. This was a very good dish, though plain. The cabbage was salty and oily and not wilty. As a side vegetable, I'd recommend it. Great for what it is, B+
Finally we got the fish head w/ two kinds of chilis. This dish was actually hot. The yellow/green chilis were the hottest, and they were pickled; the red chilis were unpickled but also spicy. The fish head is rather large, and there's plenty of meat toward the back and gelatinous fishy stuff up front. You really need some rice or noodles to soak up the sour broth and lessen the chili fire. Excellent and spicy, A-
Unless a place is known for its noodles, I've ceased to expect much. These noodles were OK and they certainly did their job, soaking up sauce, but they were also very unexciting. I guess Hunan is too southerly to really care about noodles that much. Alright, CIn the end, I'll admit to being disappointed. The food was fine and I enjoyed my meal and the service was great. I did get some real spice with the fish head. But nothing lived up to the hype my friends had generated about this restaurant. This is not an "impress your friends with this awesome place you found" type of place. It's good. It's just not that good.
