I have been dying to try out Sumac restaurant as I had not noticed it yet. I made the reservation as I understood the place is normally full. Even though there were tables available at 19:30, it filled up considerably, so reserving a table is recommended. We were with two and I thought that the tables for two were not positioned in a great way (one against the bar, one behind the door and two behind bigger tables between two poles). The waitstaff was very friendly and quickly gave us our menus. We were with two and I thought that the tables for two were not positioned in a great way (one against the bar, one behind the door and two behind bigger tables between two poles).
The waitstaff was very friendly and quickly gave us our menus. We ordered to excellent glasses of Chilean Merlot and at 65 dollars a glass, it was a good deal. Still, it was the cheapest glass they had. They also offer lots of Lebanese wine which normally is not bad.
We opted for eating mezzes only. We had hummus which was quite good. It had good consistency and plenty of Tahini flavor. For my liking, I would have liked a little more lemonjuice in there though.
We also ordered Mouhamara, a dip made from walnuts, dried bellpeppers and pomegranate. We liked it a lot. It was silky smooth and sometimes made you believe you were eating pate.
We also had a nice salad (bottom one on the list with cold mezzes) and it had a fantastic dressing. All came with nice slightly toasted thin flat pita bread.
For hot mezzes we ordered Haloumi (nicely grilled, although we thought it could be grilled a little bit longer) and Kibbeh (ground lambmeat with pinenuts and spices with a lamb/bulgur coating) met yoghurt sauce. The Kibbeh was good and very smooth.
Finally we had Falafel which is a favorite. Here we were a bit disappointed. The round balls were worked too much. They were a bit gloopy and did not taste like falafel we know. Still, could be a different version, but it was not to our liking. Just a matter of taste perhaps.
One thing I did not like was the fact that the hot dishes were served with some salad leaves that had seen better days (brown tips and some dark spots). I did not expect a chef to put these on a plate.
We were offered some nice desserts but we were full. Next time.
題外話/補充資料:
We left satisfied and will return. However, this is not a place to go to if your budget is limited. We spend 860 dollars and had ordered 6 mezzes, a bottle of sparkling water and three glasses of wine. That is not cheap. Quality was good however, so it was worth it.
