Tucked at the end of Gough Street, Gingko House, though unassuming in appearance, was completely sold out for two seatings at lunch time. We went for a 1 pm seating and was expecting a lot from this highly reviewed restaurant on Open Rice. Were we disappointed? In summary, somewhat but it wasn't too bad.Firstly, the appetizers and desserts that came with the set lunch were a complete joke. Firstly, the appetizers and desserts that came with the set lunch were a complete joke. Mushroom soup tasted starchy and sort of "canned", with a strong aftertaste of powdered vegetable bouillon. Dessert was "radioactive" green jello. (didn't really want to touch it). Discounting appetizers and desserts, for the price (approx 60-80 per person), the main course was actually quite respectable! The main courses were varied ranging from steaks, pastas, fish, pizza, sandwiches etc.
The pan fried seabream (over organic red rice) was very tasty and cooked just right with the flesh soft and well seasoned and the pasta with smoked duck and truffle wasn't bad either, with a generous serving of duck and premade truffle sauce (no, you ain't gonna get fresh shaven truffles for this price) .Portions were large and taste was generally quite good.
Service was alright. Seating was very cramped. But what do you expect? It was pretty good for the price we paid.
