I went to Comptoir today with two of my friends for lunch today. We had been craving French cuisine cuz we were all watching Emily in Paris.Food was really good. We ordered truffle cheese croquettes, sauteed octopus, beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes, ravioles du Royans.For sides, we ordered fries and roast sweet potato. When the sides arrived, the server put down the french fries and a plate of steamed broccoli& almonds. We immediately informed him that we had NOT ordered the steamed broccol
Food was really good. We ordered truffle cheese croquettes, sauteed octopus, beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes, ravioles du Royans.
For sides, we ordered fries and roast sweet potato. When the sides arrived, the server put down the french fries and a plate of steamed broccoli& almonds. We immediately informed him that we had NOT ordered the steamed broccoli. Instead, it should be the roast sweet potato. The server understood and then told us "the steamed broccoli is on the house", and he put it down. We thought that was sweet of the server/ restaurant to do this.
However, when we got the bill, we noticed that we were being charged for the the steamed broccoli, which should have been "on the house". We just wanted to ask the server (another one) for clarification, as we had been told that it was on the house. (We honestly were NOT looking to trouble him. We just wanted to clarify). Nevertheless, the server's response was beyond rude. He then asked us, "Did you eat it?". Just that - Did you eat it.
We were shocked. He just asked if we had eaten the broccoli. And after answering "yes", he just left our table without saying another word. He. Just. Left.
The three of us were a bit taken aback. It felt like we were almost bad customers trying to just not pay for a food item. But seriously no - we would be perfectly happy to just pay for it (and we DID.), but it was the server's nonchalant and impolite response that really frustrated me. It had been a wonderful and incredible dining experience, before we got rudely treated by the server upon getting the check. It was frankly quite disappointing that our lunch ended on such an unpleasant note.
How could a server just *question* customers rude like that? "Did you eat it?" - I'm still incredulous that such words were said to us.
Anyways, the food was really good.
