Boyfriend and I decided to go out for a nice dinner together. Something casual but yet still nice. Frites came to mind. With locations in several areas of Hong Kong Island, we we chose this one as we hadn't gone to this location before.A lot smaller than the other branches, it was still very busy on weekday night. But it was decorated like the other branches. Complete with "stained glass" windows to mimic a church with a huge drink menu that they call the "Beer Bible". And it clearly is biblica
A lot smaller than the other branches, it was still very busy on weekday night. But it was decorated like the other branches. Complete with "stained glass" windows to mimic a church with a huge drink menu that they call the "Beer Bible". And it clearly is biblical in choices.
Menu is in English and Chinese and is found as a table mat.
As this place boasts a huge beer selection, we both had a beer. We were here during happy hour so we got 50% off our drinks! Boyfriend tried an Augustjin Grand Cru ($40, $20 during happy hour) on the left and I had Lindemans Framboise ($40, $20 during happy hour) on the right. I think I always order a fruit beer while here and I love the framboise version. Sour and tastes like you're drinking juice. Boyfriend liked his beer choice. He felt it went down smooth and had a slight creamy taste. I just felt it was beer.
We started with a starter of steak tartare ($185). It came with slices of toasted sour dough. The steak was tender and nicely seasoned. Wonderful additions of onions and a great yolk to tie it all together.
One cannot go to Frites without having a mussels pot. They have six versions to choose from. We chose Provencale and chose half kilo ($245). There was a generous serving of thick cut fries and their amazing bread. The mussels were fresh and with the addition of tomatoes and herbs, it really made them taste even better.
Boyfriend loves the pork knuckle here so we ordered one ($255). It was nicely sliced for us so we didn't have to attack at it with a knife and fork. It may be 750 grams but most of the weight is the huge bone so it's really not unfinishable. The pork skin was crunchy. The meat was a moist and salty. You really do need a glug of beer afterwards. There was a generous portion of roasted vegetables and potatoes.
We ended the night with dessert. I only wanted an apple tarte tatin ($100). It arrives in a skillet where the waiter will flip it out and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drown in calvados cream. Simply lovely. The apples were soft and caramelized. The cream was simply lickworthy.
A great little evening out. Food is always good in a casual setting. Service informative about the choices of beer to choose from. I wonder .. are they still doing the Mussels Monday deal? Perhaps we should have asked. We'll be back.
