Konjac (蒟蒻) is a traditional Japanese jelly-like health food made from a kind of potato called Konnyaku potato. It does not have fat, and is rich in dietary fiber and low in calories. Most often used in oden, konjac is flavorless with a rubbery and jello-like texture. Kitchen Delite offers fusion-like healthy cuisine by pairing konjac noodles with teriyaki chicken, kobe beef, seafood, and even sichuan spicy chicken. The restaurant is located on Hoi Kwong Street with its ever-changing restaurants
The restaurant is small and crowded so best to come early for lunch. The lunch menu consisted of a variety of noodles and rice. For all of the dishes, you can choose to pair it with either konjac noodle, konjac udon, or yellow ginger rice. My friend and I chose to get 2 dishes to share for lunch. Sugar-free Cold Soymilk - consistent with its concept of healthy living, Kitchen Delite offers their own home-made sugar-free soymilk as part of their lunch set. The soymilk was very natural with a strong soybean flavor. I am someone that likes sweet so I added in the syrup that was provided to make my soymilk sweeter - a great option as people can tweak the sweetness to their own liking! Angus Beef Steak with Cold Konjac Noodle ($78) - the angus beef steak was cooked to medium with the insides still a nice pinkish color. The beef was juicy and tender with the right proportion of fat to meat ratio. The konjac noodle was very fun to eat! Its texture was jello-like yet bouncy, chewy and rubbery all at the same time. As it has no flavor of its own, the cold konjac noodle was mixed with a tangy sauce which was appetizing and refreshing. I usually don't like eating cold noodles, but I think the konjac noodle was perfect for eating as a cold dish! Grilled Teriyaki Chicken with Spa Egg and Konjac Noodle in Soup ($68) - we picked the same noodles but served in a hot broth. As I said, the konjac noodle was more suitable as a cold dish as it had nicely soaked up the tangy sauce. The noodles in the soup, however, was not as tasty as the broth was neither rich enough or distinctive in flavor to enhance the konjac so the noodle ended up being pretty tasteless in this dish. Not as much fun eating the noodles in this case. The grilled teriyaki chicken was a bit bland and not crispy enough on the outside. The spa egg was perfectly cooked though with the liquid yolk nicely wrapped inside the egg white. This restaurant is perfect for health-conscious folks who would like to spice up their diet with a spin of Japanese health food with konjac noodles! We could all use a little healthy diet in our lives!
