Every year the small island of Cheung Chau comes alive with the Cheung Chau Bun Festival. On this day thousands crowd onto the island to witness the parade of floating children and the climb to the top of the bun tower. The entire island also becomes vegetarian including the McDonald's on this island! If you have never witnessed this, it's quite a thing to behold.I've witnessed it a couple of times and well .. it is amazing. But I hate HATE HATE the crowds. And the hot summer sun. So, I decid
I've witnessed it a couple of times and well .. it is amazing. But I hate HATE HATE the crowds. And the hot summer sun. So, I decided to go to the island a couple of weeks before the festival because hey ... I still wanted to get a peace bun! Yes, the 平安包 (English name: peace bun). The one bun that symbolizes the whole event! According to history, these buns were created with the words "peace" stamped on them and sacrificed out to the sea god Pak Tai as there was a huge plague on the island and pirates. For some reason, this sacrifice seemed to work and the it continued on though now evolving a bit to adapt to the times.
郭錦記餅店 (English name: Kwok Kam Kee Cake Shop) is the official bakery of the peace buns (平安包) for the festival. For over 40 years, this bakery has made the entire bun tower during the festival. That's almost 9000 buns! That's for the tower alone! They say this shop is so popular that they sell almost 10,000 buns in one day during the festival! That's a lot of buns! Though they have no English name on the store front, you can't miss them. They are the only bakery where there is a line of people waiting to buy a bun. The buns are white in color with words "peace" stamped on it. They are filled with white lotus paste, sesame paste of red bean paste. They use no animal oils and it's truly vegetarian friendly!
But this year, they have created something a different. Along with their usual peace buns, they collaborated with Sanrio to create peace buns stamped with Hello Kitty, Pompompurin and Gudetama.
They have a set of magnets and key chains for sale as well that are $38 each. They have a special magnet for $68.
You can also purchase a stamp book for $20 so you can stamp on it with their special stamps.
But with all those aside, they also sold a set of four buns with all the characters for $88. If you want the special magnet one, they have a set for $128. I wasn't too interested in that magnet as I wanted another one so I only bought the $88 set.
It came in a cute box that was easy to carry away with me.
The buns were fresh from the oven and super hot! But they did reheat well in the microwave the next day, too! But yeah! Here they are! CUTE! OH WOW! CUTE!
There was a stamp of each of the characters (pink was Hello Kitty, green was Gudetama and bright yellow was Pompompurin) and there was a white bun with the traditional stamp as well. Each was filled with something different. The white one was white sesame, Hello Kitty was red bean paste, Pompompurin was white lotus paste and Gudetama was red bean paste.
The buns were pretty big and fluffy. Filling was super sweet. You really need to wash it down with a good glass of milk afterwards.
