My colleagues recommended me to this Korean BBQ restaurant as he knew that i loved Korean BBQ and think that i should try it. I brought my wife to this restaurant for dinner. Mugung Hanwoo was located along Staunton Street and it was opened not long ago. The restaurant lay-out looked quite posh and high class. They have few selections for set menu and ala-carte. After some deliberation, we go for complete hanwoo set which served 2 person. It consisted of soup, salad, starter, three cuts of BBQ
They have few selections for set menu and ala-carte. After some deliberation, we go for complete hanwoo set which served 2 person. It consisted of soup, salad, starter, three cuts of BBQ meat, rice, dessert and drink.
Like most Korean restaurants, they served complimentary side dishes. I personally liked their anchovies. It was slightly salty and meaty. Radish was sour and crunchy too. The salad was quite special in a way that the chef used his own marinated black sesame sauce as dressing. It was surprisingly sweet and goes well with the salad.
Iced pomelo tea - Taste of the tea was not that strong, but it was clear and sweet with pomelo meat residing at the bottom.
Beef bone soup - It was hard to find quality beef bone soup in Hong Kong as most of them tasted rather bland, or too milky. As i took the first sip, it tasted almost similar to those that i have tasted in Seoul. It was tasty and smooth, with the soup being cooked with beef bone for prolonged period of time. There are noodles inside the soup as well. It was chewy and the beef was soft as well.
Hanwoo tartar - Personally i was not a big fan of beef tartar as i found it weird to consume beef raw. Since my wife loved it, i tried few mouthful. The raw beef was mixed with egg and pear, and i needed to admit it exceeded my expectation. The crunchy and juicy texture of pears complimented nicely with the beef tartar which was soft, almost melting in my mouth.
We were given rib, bottom round and outside flat as our 3 cuts for BBQ meat. We were given BBQ sauce, salt, garlic & lettuce to go along with the meat.
The waitress told us that all ingredients were sourced directly from Korea, sticking by the chef's own principles. I was shocked that the mushroom was still very juicy even after BBQ. All 3 kinds of beef were very tender and juicy, going well with the fresh and juicy lettuce. Every meat was sliced till equal and the texture was thick, almost to taste the meat more.
Beef tongue - It was sliced till too thin, thus i could not taste much of the meat. It was much more ordinary compared to the other 3 meats i consumed earlier.
Kimchi fried rice - It was sticky by nature and it was flavourful and slightly spicy. Towards the end, i found that it was quite oily at the bottom of the bowl.
Pomelo honey drink - This was more of a drink than a dessert. It was sweet and refreshing and in the end, i drunk alot of water for this meal.
