I've always been a fan of hearty, artery-clogging foods, and today I was particularly hungry. Recalling a wings place I've been to years ago, I rediscovered The Big Bite, which had moved from its old location to this rather tucked away but convenient location, 2 mins from the north point MTR exit, the bus terminal and the ferry terminal.It was empty when we arrived at 6pm. It was empty when we arrived at 6pm. The decor was unbashedly North American - a Canadian flag adorned the cashier desk and in playful homage to the hunting history of the wild north, heads of stuffed animals lined up the wall along one side of the restaurant.
I was delighted to see that they stuck to their theme and stocked some Canadian beers; I quickly grabbed the generic (but hard-to-find in HK) Molson Canadian ($35) and a Whistler Beer ($52), a craft beer 100% owned and brewed in British Columbia. Lots of Canadian pride!
We happily finished our beer right before the food came, and by that time we were like a pack of hungry wolves; we jumped at the sight of food and neglected to take nice closeup pictures. Apologies for that.
From the left to the right, the two of us had the Spicy Chilli Cheese Dog ($52), which was not spicy at all, but bombarded with chilli and cheese. Surprisingly the flavor of the sausage was very much intact! Between mouthfuls of the hotdog, we chewed on the delicious Big Bite Burger ($49), which was made with 1/3 pounds of grilled US ground beef. The patty was dripping with the juice of the meat and I wanted to tell everyone how good it was, but my mouth was full...Our sides were the Mushroom Poutine ($42) and Honey Garlic Buffalo Wings ($45). Ever since college I have loved poutine, but never have I tried it with mushrooms and may I say that this HIT THE SPOT! Mushrooms itself are very meaty and gravy is well, meat sauce. So although the portion was not very big, the combination of 'shrooms and gravy over fries totally won me over. The honey garlic wings came with celery stalks and a blue cheese dip. The honey garlic sauce was heavy-handed on the honey, reminiscent of sweet, candied foods. The fans of salty/spciy foods may want to go for the other flavours on the menu. Otherwise, it was freshly fried and addictingly crispy upon bite.
We were gratified and a bit full to move anywhere. So we stayed a bit longer to play tick-tac-toe on the tables - yes, you heard me right, YOU CAN DRAW ON THE TABLES you eat on, chalk is provided! After a bit of scribbling and giggling, the food coma took over and I decided to call it a night. I will definitely bring my friends next time to share the cold beer, good food, and chill vibe.
:||Good for||::Canadians and non-Canadians who want a fun place to chill over beers and (excellent) greasy finger foods. Seats are a bit limited so unless you plan to takeover the restaurant, I suggest small groups of 5 or less.
A point to note is that every Tuesday, the restaurant hosts a Wing Night where wings are only $3 apiece! This is the reason I know of this place and although they have other gimmicks now such as occasional aged steaks, rack of lamb and fun things like the drawing chalks, Wing Night remains the original attraction for me and is a great way for buddies to meet up to beer and chill. I heard if you successfuly finish 6 Homicide Wings in 10 mins, you will receive a commemorative badge...
