KFC?

Yes. KFC. The American fast food chain that gives us finger licking good fried chicken. Would Colonel Sanders approve? Hmm...boyfriend and I decided to check it out.

I noticed it in a recent posting on a local magazine and we found that currently only one branch of KFC is doing this. This KFC is newly renovated and is located next to the computer center in Wanchai. No, not the nicer one near the MTR station but the more ghetto one. The actual restaurant is located in the basement. Upon arrival, it seemed a lot of people had read the same magazine. The restaurant was packed and everyone was doing hot pot. There was not one table in sight chewing on a piece of fried chicken.

Menu is in Chinese.  There is an English one. You have to ask. But the general flyer they have is in Chinese. Cost of the hotpot is $49.90 and comes in two styles: beef or seafood. It also includes a soft drink and a bowl of rice, instant noodles or udon.

You can also add extra items. As boyfriend and I decided to order one beef and one seafood,  we deducted that the only item that wasn't included was the dumplings so we got that.

Once your order is ready, you bring your tray of food to your table. A staff will follow you with a portable lit gas stove and they'll place it underneath. They suggest you cover it with the lid and wait for it to boil before starting. Here's a tip for you. If you are not eating this alone, get a bigger table. This table was clearly too cramped for both of us once we got the pots going.

Let's break down the items.

This is the seafood version. It included lettuce, one mussel, one shrimp, tofu, tofu puffs, shitake mushroom, couple of slices of pumpkin. corn, an imitation crabstick and chikuwa. The broth was a lot sweeter in taste.

and soysauce for sushi and sashimi. Strange that soysauce was available for the seafood version.

This is the beef version. It included everything in the seafood version minus the shrimp and mussel. The broth here was  lighter in taste.

As this was the beef hotpot version, it included a plate of beef. Not great quality but for under $50, who is going to be picky?

It came with a sesame dipping sauce. This was really not that great. It didn't actually taste like sesame sauce but more like a watered down version of Chinese ground bean sauce. We skipped on the dipping of this.

Both sets came with a choice of rice, instant noodle or udon. We chose udon and it came in a frozen in a package. Instant noodle was actually a package of Nissin instant noodles. The udon was ok. Fairly chewy and not mushy at all.

We added $9 for dumplings. These tasted like the frozen variety you get at the supermarket.

Soup can be refilled and you do that on your own. There is no one to serve you like the other fast food places. You basically grab the plastic jug back to your table, refill the pot and return the jug back.

For a cheap individual hot pot experience, this fits the bill. Ingredients may not be high quality, but this also fast food. The soup base from Yoshinoya is still be the best but KFC does a fairly fine job. What I found strange was that even though we are eating in a place famous for fried chicken, they didn't offer chicken meat for hot pot like Maxim's fast food does. But over all, pretty good. I'd  try it again.
