I discussed previously how I think Dan Ryan's is one of those sure place where its good comfort food, and good service so always a good bet to eat there. But here is the thing in Hong Kong what is good one day might not be 6 months later. its seems that for some weird reason keeping some consistency is difficult, for the shop owner or large operator alike. maybe nobody cares maybe the rent are too high to keep good staff in, I am not sure but what i know is that the number of time i go to a plac
So where does Dan Ryan's stand? I as disappointed last day when i went in one of there outlet call The Metropolitan cafe, but although it is the same group it is not the same brand, as confuse is the brand at the Met as certain is the one of Dan Ryan's. So here we are on a Friday night going for a quick bite there as we have a movie ticket. Happy surprise awaited us s they offer a 15$ discount for movie ticket holder on friday night, then we were oriented to a seat which was not convenient but after asking if any other table was available we were offer a better choice.
We sat and ordered our food quiet quickly and we serve promptly as usual in Dan Ryan's. the service was good and attentive and it will end up to be even better than anyone could expect. we ordered a burger, some chicken wings with blue cheese sauce, a fried seafood plate and some potato skins, a beer and a soft drink.
As said the service was good and very professional, the food was not up to the usual level. don't get me wrong we eat it and it was ok, but it was not as it is usually nor as it should be. for instance my burger was really not good and i could have changed it but i did not want to waste time explaining why nor how, and the waiter and the manager were nice enough to notice I was not happy about it. the manager/supervisor came and ask if i was ok, and when i said that the burger was not good, she did offer to replace it. Ok so right there the fact that she offers immediately to change it was enough for me to be satisfied, but I did decline and thank her for the offering. it was not bad to the point that it was worse wasting the food, I ate it, I did not enjoyed, it was overcooked, the bread tasted stale and had grill mark that taste burn more than anything else, the overall of the burger was a dry stale tasteless sandwich, I was hungry, I was a bit in a hurry, I ate it and hoped that my beer will compensate for the lack of commitment in my burger. That was a mistake, first of all I am surprised that the chicken wings and skin potato arrived before our drinks. but they might have stand on the bar for a while as the foam that i should have on my beer which i usually enjoyed had already disappear before the glass reach my hand, very disappointing. the chicken wings were ok, not great as they were not very hot, which make me doubt they are fried or cooked to order, they might be cooked in advance and kept warm somewhere for a while. i don't know but the door is open for a doubt. the potato skin were good and the filling was correct, again did not look like they were made to order but it was not at fault either.
the plates of fried seafood was good and the portion was large enough to feed the hungrier costumers, the french fries in the burger were overcooked hard and not appetizing, they were a bit better with the seafood.
Again when we requested our bill the waiter was quick and when we notice a mistake on the invoice it was corrected immediately without any arguments and with a smile, to our surprise the manager/supervisor might had made a decision to offer our drinks because of the unpleasant experience with the burger. now you dont see this every day in Hong Kong, we did not ask for a discount of any sort, I did refuse to change the burger while it was offered to me so she did not have to extend the kindness or the courtesy so far, but the fact that she did, confirm how good this service team is. As said in my title, it is still a good place. not because I get drinks offered but i believe that two times in three years i had a food not up to my expectations are not good enough to said the place is not good anymore. Dan Ryan's to me is still a place worth to go to, food will be good most of the time, the atmosphere is always great, and the service has actually improve... need a bite before a movie head up to Dan Ryan's you should be satisfy by the speed of service and your overall experience.
