Two of us arrived Jinli. There was only one couple of Westerners. Since it wasn't that busy, there was only one waitress.
First of all, we thought the ambience is quite impressive, compared to the other places along the Main Street. It doesn't look local at all. The only thing we thought they could do to make it better is the style of their table cloth...
For lunch, they have very good value set lunch, a dish including a bowl of rice, or a la carte. Price is reasonable. Set lunch is around HK$50. Other normal dishes are within HK$100, except if you go for a whole fish...
We went for a la carte because we wanted to try to few more things. The waitress/ manager, Lily, was very helpful and suggested a few dishes.
Lily served us tea right away. We found the taste of the tea quite special. It's a bit sweet and has a taste of plum. Then, we asked Lily about the tea. She said it's maple tea from Canada. It's interesting to serve this kind of tea in a Sichuan restaurant.
We ordered Sichuan spicy chicken, spinach in sesame sauce, sichuan lamb slices with scallions, and braised eggplant pot with salted fish.
All the dishes are nicely presented and the taste is very good indeed. Everything was hot and spicy but it's what we went for. The taste was just right though.
Overall, we thought this place is run with heart and can beat any restaurant in Central Soho.
We had a chat with Lily and found out that the owner is a French. They also owned Coco Thai in Deep Clear Water Bay and the former Cococabana. Jinli also serves hotpot at night. I wonder if they have nice fresh seafood since they are so close to the fishermen's shelter.
What a lovely hidden surprise!
