Wow- this restaurant has been in Central for ages and surprisingly the number of reviews are rather few. This restaurant is simply not for everyone especially those who are claustrophobic and have exquisite taste buds. But somehow i have found peace and fun while dining at the 50's. I would advise all you cheapos to arrive at 12 and leave by 12.45 to enjoy the early bird discount. for 55 HKD it's a great deal for anyone who skipped breakfast and did a whole lot of gym the night before.

Getting into the restaurant is a little tricky, before entering the lift you would probably be humped by at least 2 indian usherers whom operate from the 2nd floor and opposite building. Expect the Indian food sales staff to blast you with words like "Nan-bread, pork-peng, cheap cheap 60 hkd, 48 hkd lunch set nice nice, follow ME!"
So if you are not interested in Indian cuisince kindly quickly rush into the lift and give a big smile to your lunchmates for successfully escaping food harrasment.

As you reached the fifities on the 3rd floor, do not be scared by the dim lights and black walls. Take a chance, turn right and walk straight into the restaurant. The first thing that will catch your attention is the groovy 80's sei dai tin wong songs and a huge drum set on a mini stage.

As you take a sit, most first timers will notice frames of John Trovolta from Grease(1978), Bruce Lee, Teressa Teng, Elvis Presly, Anak, Zeplin, ACDC, Santana, Beatles, er... mostly bug/dead celebraties from the 50's to 80's. And if you keep discussing who those celebs are with your mates, a zombiefied looking waiter with frizzy long hair and partly bald front will comr foward and test your dead celeb knowledge.

Waiter: you know this guy? (points at the frame)
you : Yea yea,,, er... yea.... err????

(Waiter smiles and ignores your response)
Waiter: So set A,B or C?

(you're wondering if you should answer his question)
you : Oh,,,er ....cow's tongue please
(Waiter nods his head and walks away silently)

So the waiter is gone, maybe you know some of the celebs then the plate stuffing begins. It's all about the quantity to make your penny's worth. The menu is pretty much what mommy will cook for dinner during weekdays. Expect friend rice, spaghetti, chicken chops, tuna salad, mushroom soup, garden salad, siu bak choi, pudding, and a whole lot of watermelon, honey dew and yellow lemon.

As time passes the crowd gets a little unbearable. I usually leave at 12.45 sharp since it's close to impossible to get any food from the tray area.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention. 55hkd also includes one free drink and there's no extra charge for cold drinks.

What more can I ask for? I'm a cheapskate 22year old fresh graduate who gluts my stomach and would probably have instant noodles for dinner.

For those credit card users, yes you can use your credit card at no extra cost.

See you guys at the Fifties. Bon Appetit!
