Situated in one of the world’s leading financial center, the Australian Outback Steakhouse really comes out of the blue. The company, Bloomin Brands Inc., opened the first Outback Steakhouse in Florida in 1988, with the premise of offering the customer quality steak of a reasonable price. The restaurant, simply ornamented by empty wine bottles placed in a rack, creates a western, desert-like feel, and is enhanced by the dim and patterned lamps hanging from the ceiling on top of every table. The se
The restaurant, simply ornamented by empty wine bottles placed in a rack, creates a western, desert-like feel, and is enhanced by the dim and patterned lamps hanging from the ceiling on top of every table.
The service, however, was atrocious compared to the ambience of the restaurant. When we arrived at the restaurant, the receptionist took us to a seat at the very back, right next to the toilets. There were many people coming in and out of the doors, and it became quite distracting and soon we wanted a change of seats. We called the receptionist and asked if we could sit near to the entrance, but she rudely rejected us. Only when we called for the manager, were we able to sit in the place we wanted to.
I ordered a cream of mushroom soup. I could hear my eager stomach longing for the soup, my brain imagining the nice and creamy soup that would warm up my stomach for my main course. But no. I was wrong as the Mayan calendar's prediction of the end of the world in 2012. It was like condensed cream mixed with sea water, except concentrated ten times more. The salinity of the soup was revolting. The actual flavor of the mushroom, on the other hand, was diluted and dull. After the third spoon of soup, I could not stand it anymore. I simply told the waiter to retrieve the soup and serve my main course.
My main course, the Angus Rib-eye Steak, surpassed my expectations. It came with a not-so-tasty mushroom sauce, some butter vegies and fries. The steak was surprisingly addictive. It was perfectly cooked by the chargrill, the seared meat on the outside had a burnt fragrance, and the interior was tender and lush. The contrast between the outside and the inside was ideal. As I relished every bite, the meat seemed to get better and better, I longed for even more. Within a few minutes, I had devoured the entire 12oz steak by myself.
I was so absorbed by the steak I forgot the butter vegies. The “butter vegies” were more like vegies-dumped-in-hot-water-then-taken-out-half-cooked. They were bland, watery and had absolutely no butter taste whatsoever. I was totally let down by them.
The Outback Steakhouse is definitely the place to go if you are looking for high quality steak of a cheap price. Even though the starters were a bit disappointing, the steak, which was the restaurant’s signature dish, saved the restaurant from totally failing itself. However, if you are going there for a relaxed dinner and an enjoyable time, I would recommend elsewhere.
