The first impression of Vietnam Woods is rather striking: strikingly hip decor for a Vietnamese restaurant, strikingly noisy and strikingly packed. Seriously, the acoustic is worse than a popular dim sum restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and the non-banquette seating tables are really close to each other. If one wants to spread rumours surreptitiously, this is the place to do it!

After manoeuvring myself onto my seat and shouting "Hi" to my friends across a 2' x 2' table, we settled down to inspect the lunch menu. There were 3 price brackets of set lunches, each with different choices of main dishes and a common list of starters and drinks. I subscribe to the belief that a Vietnamese restaurant's calibre is reflected in the quality of its pho tai, so 3 of us ordered the pho with bahn hoi as starter (why are we so united in our tastes sometimes??), M decided to splash out and ordered the pricier stewed beef brisket in tomato sauce and deep-fried chicken wings.

Drinks - the lime soda had a coconuty taste which we initially ascribed to unclean glass but manager came to explain that it was the pandan syrup, explanation accepted. The coconut milk drink with green jelly failed (in my book), I'm still in search of one that has slightly glutinous jelly bits...
Bahn Hoi - mixed reviews - 2 said it was yummy (their eyes sparkled as they said it) and 2 said it was ordinary, the white pepper taste was too overpowering and as a result we couldn't really taste the content of the little packages.

Chicken wings - not bad, but then it's hard to mess up chicken wings.
Pho - the moment of truth..... I have to give it a thumbs down.... the beef quality was mediocre and there was not enough of it. The soup suffered from the same problem as my bahn hoi which was overwhelmed by white pepper taste. Pho 26 still reigns.
Too peppery

Tomato beef brisket stew - again, mediocre, the beef was not tender enough and the sauce was very flat as it only tasted of tomato paste.
Cute bowl, so-so content

In terms of pricing, $80 odd dollars for pho + starter + drinks is really not bad, especially with the nice decor and clean environment, but I would expect the food quality to be higher given the background of the restaurant. Despite a somewhat disappointing 1st visit, I would consider returning to try other dishes.
