When I first noted this place, I made a mental not to visit. But after reading the glowing review of this place at the F*** Yeah Noms blog, I accelerated my plans. The end result was, for me, entirely disappointing.I was with three other friends, so we decided to get all of the plates to share, plus a noodle bowl each. Chicken Edamame

Beansprout Salad w/ Sesame & Garlic

The Beansprout Salad ($30) is not much better. Try to imagine eating just a bowl of plain, uncooked bean sprouts. Now throw in some green onions and some fried garlic and *maybe* sesame (though I didn't really notice that). That's what you've got. Poor, D+
Spicy Pulled Pork & Cucumber

The Pulled Pork w/ Cucumber ($35), which I would call "cucumber with a little pork," was much better. First, it's noted as spice-level 2 on the menu, the highest spice level. It is moderately spicy. The sauce isn't particularly flavorful, but as I said, it is spicy, and the cucumber is nice and crunchy, and the little bits of pork that are in there are pretty good. Pretty good, B
Beef Tataki with Sambal

I had to look up Tataki ($50) on Wikipedia. Apparently it's just a Japanese method of food preparation that involves briefly searing thinly sliced meats that have been marinated in vinegar. Anyway, the stuff at F&B wasn't particularly spicy (though also labeled level 2), but it was tender and subtle and I have nothing to say against it. Good, B+

I got the Gurney ($88) which comes with "fresh Hokkien noodles + thin rice noodles with pulled pork in prawn broth." As you can also see, there are also prawns and cabbage.

Here's a look at the two types of noodles. Here's what I thought: the noodles were good. I like all noodles, and the Hokkien noodles had an excellent thickness and texture, with a decent flavor. The rice noodles were less interesting, but still very good.

The broth of the soup however wasn't great. It's "prawn broth" and once again, the menu is starkly literal. Tom Yum broth is cut with acid and spice and grease and salt in such a way that its shrimpiness is merely one in a nice balance of flavors. This is just prawn broth and it's bland while also being overbearingly prawny. It's listed as being spicy, but I didn't notice any spice, even after dumping the diced chilis on the table into it. The broth somewhat ruined my enjoyment of the noodles, since of course they wound up tasting of prawn and little else.

The pork was in small amounts, but it was good. Overall: marginally acceptable, C-

In general, none of my dining companions felt blown away by this place. "Okay" was about the best anyone managed. My wife ordered the Nagasaki ("cold somen noodles with almond crusted chicken" $78). She wasn't a fan, and thought the chicken was dry and the noodles were bland. She gives it a C-

My general thought is that the food is bland. Only the cucumber and the tataki had any flavor to them beyond just "prawn flavor." At the end of the meal, somebody from the restaurant asked us if there was anything they could do to make the food better, what with them being a new restaurant and all. What was I supposed to say? "Make it better"? In the end though, they are new and maybe they will make it better. I got a rewards stamp card, so maybe I'll try it again in a month.
