I have to be very honest with you, I was slightly disappointed when it was brought to our table because I was expecting the peanut paste soup base but it came in clear soup base with some spicy soy paste on top instead.

However, the dried shrimp taste as well as the fermented soy taste were actually not that bad. The savoury paste gave a nice saltiness to the clear noodle with some scallion floating on top. While the noodle is the expected kind of white flour Chinese Shanghai noodle which is a bit more coarse with a softer texture.

Noodle soup with Donpo pork $42

My friend ordered a fattier choice of noodle with the infamous fatty Donpo pork belly. The noodle also came plain with spring onion and pickled cabbages, while the pork is served on the side.

The perfectly balanced fat and meat ratio from the meat was just beautiful. The meat part remained soft and the fat part just acted like butter!

Spiced Smoked Fish $32

A traditional Shanghainese dish but traditionally it should be smoked until very dried with a almost caramelised sweet and sour surface. The flavour and the sauce were pretty authentic, though the grass crap flesh was soft, moist and felt like it had been fried before being marinated in the sauce.

I would really say up until this point, the restaurant is serving a modern style Shanghainese cuisine with a good taste. So, let's move on.

I did read a few Openrice reviews before ordering this. The minced meat filling was nicely spiced after being mixed with a lot of spring onions but I gotta say, the dough was a bit uneven with the bottom and top being quite thick and the side being too thin that could barely hold the filling!

This drink is also recommended by Openrice and I personally think that it is the best dish among all if you consider soyabean milk a dish. The savoury version of this drink has deep fried Chinese dough in it and with some spring onion sprinkled on top. I also ordered an extra egg to be added into the drink which had already been pre-mixed into the hot salty drink.

It is not too easy to find salted soyabean milk nowadays and I can only compare it with a few other restaurants I tried in Hong kong. I think it's by far one of the best one because of its sort of naturally salted taste with crunchy dough complimenting the drink, while the egg gave an even creamier texture in this smooth thick soyabean milk. I was just nice that it was not too overly salted and I can tell from my tongue that it was lower in MSG!
