While the buns lacked a certain creaminess or filling to prevent them from drying out, the savoury floss and sweet buttery kaya made up for it (seriously - kaya on pork floss buns is a game changer - don't hate it until you try it!). Although I never grew up eating pork floss and such, with a stash of these items in my pantry, I now have endless ways to oomph my simple (and sometimes boring) dishes. It's also perfect for those wanting to explore this quintessentially Hong Kong snack and all its umami-packed goodness on their own terms.
