For someone who have ;ived in Canada it will hard not to have some nostalgia of New York fries, which is entirely a Canadian creation and has nothing to do with New York. New Yorkers seem to prefer Belgium frites that go with various flavored mayo (the most famous store being Pomme Frites on 2nd Ave), but deep in my heart I crave for this Canadian creation which you cannot find in New York.It is interesting how life turns and my most recent helping of New York Fries was enjoyed neither at Toron
It is interesting how life turns and my most recent helping of New York Fries was enjoyed neither at Toronto or New York but in TST, Hong Kong. I don’t even recall I ever order the combo as I was always in for their GRAVY – Yes, that THICK, SAVORY, SLIGHTLY BEEFY BROWN GRAVY THAT COAT TO THE FRIES, creating that chemical reaction that fat over fat or flavor over flavor! But this time I ordered the Veggie Works ($35) and an extra order of gravy ($6) to make this combo vegetarian-friendly. Even carnivores should find the generous toppings of tomatoes, and scallions quite filling and appealing, and don’t forget to add JALAPENOS slices at the condiment counter to spice up your fries! (Note: those are not olives as mentioned in some previous posts!). Since the cheese and sour cream all sit at the bottom, one should really work their way UP by starting from the fries at the bottom. My advice on how to approach this:
Use your fork to fork up fries with cheese sauce at the bottom + sour cream + vegetables + jalapenos
For vegetarian, you can stuff your face with the above now
For gravy lovers like me, dip your piles of fries into the gravy. Some toppings will fall, but fear not, as the gravy provides enough flavor to compensate for the loss of vegetables
Eat, and indulge in savory gravy and fries with potato skins!
Of course that’s just my way of enjoying the New York Fries. As far as I am concerned, they were every bit as delicious as I remember! The innards of the fries were not hollow yet not overly starchy like steak fries. The gravy at NYF has always been my favorite, and up to these days I haven’t found any chains that produce better gravy (e.g. Triple O’s sucks, KFC’s in Canada sucks more). The jalapeno added the kick at the moment you bite into it, and the slightly vinegary note rounds out the overall flavor. For myself I will be happy with just fries and gravy and the free jalapenos, but hey I need to take care of the vegetarian and this combo worked just as fine, and you can also declare that you have your vegetables today!
If you find the fries not having a crispy exterior, that’s perfectly normal as any fries topped with sauce are going to be slightly dampened. If you are too weary of this texture, just ask for sauce on the side and dip the fries into the sauce right before you put them into your mouth.
I know Americans like to make jokes about Canadians, but if they have tried New York fries, I can't see why they won’t enjoy it, like myself!
