I’ve been following Big Grains on their Instagram for a very long time and was so happy when they decided to open another shop here in Tsuen Wan. I tried three of their pastries- Hazelnut Cube, Ultimate Chocolate Tartlet and the Tiramisu Tartlet.Hazelnut Cube - HKD $48The Hazelnut Cube was definitely made with a lot of care and I appreciate all the skills that were put in to making this. The Hazelnut Cube was definitely made with a lot of care and I appreciate all the skills that were put in to making this. There is a thick outer layer of hazelnut mousse that wraps around the inside (which I believe contains a strusel layer, some ganache in the middle, perhaps chocolate and a sort of hazelnut filling). The hazelnut cube was placed on top of a dark chocolate biscuit, which added to the flavour of the pastry.
* it was a little hard to cut through and eat in one bite because it was really tall and the biscuit layer was a bit stiff but overall, it tasted really nice! (Although I hoped for a little more texture)
Ultimate Chocolate Tartlet - HKD $50
This tartlet is full of chocolate goodness and is perfect for all chocolate lovers! Although it was a little hard to cut through once again due to the tart itself being a little stiff, the pastry almost tasted like ice cream because of how smooth the chocolate ganache was. I really appreciate the work that has gone into making this because I can see the different layers in this tartlet - from the chocolate glazed top to the bottom of the tart that was filled with ganache, to the dark chocolate cocoa pieces that were placed around the tartlet, it was just made very carefully. In my opinion, it was definitely worth the price as the size was much bigger than both the tiramisu tartlet and the hazelnut cube.
Tiramisu Tartlet - HKD $33
The tiramisu tartlet has a very strong expresso coffee flavour which really surprised me. This one is definitely also more on the creamy side- if you like a really strong coffee taste, then I would recommend this dessert for you as this dessert is made of mainly espresso flavoured components e.g. the expresso soaked lady finger along with the expresso milk ganache filling. This one wasn’t very sweet and is probably more on the bitter end of the spectrum if I were to compare the three that I had.
* my only complaint was that the person packing my pastries didn’t really know how to pack them and took a long time to put them in the boxes. And I suggest maybe designing a new box to make it suitable for the pastries.
Aside from that I really do plan on coming back and trying the pastry tails as well as other pastries and bread that they are going to have - such as the matcha croissantthere are also seats outside of the shop itself so technically you can dine there as well if you desired to.
